Leading by example

Throughout his career, Dr. Jackson has inspired and revolutionized public health and students' lives, from his time as Director at the Centers for Disease Control to his nine year tenure at UCLA Fielding School of Public Health beginning in 2009. Author of many influential books, host of a PBS series, and featured in countless other media, he has influenced so many of our lives -- possibly even yours.

Join us as we honor Dr. Jackson's outstanding leadership upon his retirement. In recognition of the many environmental health champions to come, we are creating the Richard Jackson Designing Healthy Communities Fellowship.

Why should you support students in environmental health?

Students in environmental public health come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, which often ignite their sense of justice. Many arrive to UCLA with a burning desire to fix something they have observed in their world, such as unjust work conditions or neighborhood pollution.

Your support will allow them do just that, contributing to a better and healthier world.

How you can help

Your gift will be used to establish a fund to support promising graduate students to pursue a project or field experience in environmental health. Faced with daunting environmental challenges, students need support to pursue projects and collaborations that will help them develop their passion, connections, and careers.

What you will achieve by supporting Public Health students

What is raised goes directly to support current and future students' pursuit of practical experiences related to their environmental health studies. Our students have a track record of contributing to a better environment locally and globally across many sectors, conducting novel and needed work with county health departments; local and state agencies; community organizations addressing housing, toxics, and environmental justice; and trade associations.

Your gift, in coordination with UCLA's Department of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) whose faculty research, practice and policy influence measurably improved air quality and children's health in Los Angeles, will have a tangible impact on our shared future. Our students go on to work at many levels protecting populations and environments, and your gift to the Richard Jackson fellowship will help them build the experience needed to get there.

Now, more than ever, it is imperative to find partners like you to help EHS students create healthy and sustainable built environments that ensure the health and prosperity of our ecosystems, our people, and our regions for generations to come.
