2019 Men's Rowing: Row to ACRA

About Us

UCLA's Men's Rowing team is a Varsity Club Sport within the UCLA Recreation Department and is recognized by both the Pac-12 Conference and the American Collegiate Rowing Association. The team practices at 5:45 am six days a week, Monday through Saturday, out of our beautiful boathouse in Marina Del Rey. Additionally, the team has four mandatory practice sessions on campus every week: two cardio session and two weights sessions. This adds up to a time commitment of roughly 24 hours per week, including travel to practice, and is undertaken by student-athletes in the truest sense of the term. With majors ranging from Mechanical Engineering to Philosophy, the Men's Rowing team is as diverse a group as you will find at UCLA.

Recent Success

Our family has been growing exponentially in recent years. In 2016, we had just 36 athletes on our roster. Today, that number has risen to 60. A commensurate rise in the program's racing success has accompanied the team's roster growth. Since Head Coach Simon Hoadley took over the team in 2017, the team has:

  • Won the Overall Points Trophy at the Western Sprints and Pac-12 Championships (Club) in 2017 and 2018
  • Medaled in the Freshman 8+ at the Pac-12 Championships in 2018
  • Seen every freshman who raced at the 2018 Western Sprints win at least one medal
  • Seen 44% of the roster earn 2018 Pac-12 All-Academic honors, including six athletes being named to the First Team
  • Medaled at the Head of the Charles, an international regatta that fields over 2300 entries, for the first time in 30 years

How You Can Help

Despite the rising success within the program, financing is still an issue. As a Club Sport, UCLA Men's Rowing receives NO money from UCLA Athletics. Because of this, the team must rely on a combination of dues from its athletes and donations from generous friends, family and alumni to sustain its activities. After last year's successful season, our goal this year is to send as many deserving athletes as possible to ACRA, our national championship regatta, in Gainesville, Georgia. In order to do so, we will need help financing entry fees, round-trip cross-continental flights for 70 athletes and coaches, accommodations, and food. Additionally, we will need assistance gaining the experience necessary to compete at the national level, which will include entry fees and travel expenses for our schedule of spring races against the best schools on the West Coast.

UCLA Men's Rowing offers the opportunity for young men and women to compete for a national championship, participate in what many consider to be the ultimate team sport, and fosters an environment that helps forge lifelong friendships and builds successful post-graduates. Please consider helping us to reach our goals; we have a small window to raise money, and any donation helps. Thank you for supporting us and helping to make our dreams a reality!
