The UCLA Visual and Performing Arts Education (VAPAE) program brings arts education into schools and communities through community engagement, teaching artistry, and research. 

Our mission is to:

• Connect UCLA students and alumni to communities of Greater Los Angeles

• Create career pathways for VAPAE Bruins

• Research the need for arts education in all schools and all communities

• The arts are essential to educational justice.

LEARN AT UCLA

Through VAPAE’s academic coursework, UCLA students explore the theory and practice of arts education. VAPAE’s general education courses provide an introduction to community arts for all UCLA students, while special topics courses prepare VAPAE Bruins for an arts education career working with specific populations.

TEACH IN CLASSROOMS

VAPAE’s Arts Education Teaching Sequence is a comprehensive experience that leads VAPAE Bruins from educational theory to curriculum design to the classroom.

BUILD CREATIVE COMMUNITIES

VAPAE partners with schools and community organizations to provide multidisciplinary arts education for youth and families. Our afterschool and arts enrichment programs include Multigenerational Afterschool Arts (MASA), Studio Sessions, and other collaborations with nonprofits and arts institutions.

SHARE WITH PUBLIC

VAPAE contributes to public scholarship through research, public exhibitions, and lectures. VAPAE’s public projects are committed to showcasing community artwork and envisioning the impact of arts education.

VAPAE provides access to diverse, inclusive arts education for youth and families. VAPAE Bruins teach innovative arts curricula in schools as they build their own academic knowledge and professional skills.
