Our crowdfunding campaign has ended but you can still support the Academic Advancement Program by clicking here.
On behalf of Dean and Vice Provost Patricia Turner and the AAP staff we want to thank you for exceeding ALL expectations in raising over $35,000 in support of AAP programming like peer counseling and VIPS Day One.
It was exciting to see 336 participants joining together as a giving community to make an impact for AAP students.
Your support means AAP can provide peer counselors to work with new students to encourage and promote academic achievement and help them navigate campus resources. It also means the VIPS Day One program can develop and grow mentors for young men of color in the 9th grade, working with them through to college and graduate education.
We are so grateful for your generosity and look forward to updating you throughout the year on how your support has made an impact.
During this season of giving and gratitude, we are thankful for you. At each step of the way during our holiday season giving in support of AAP, you have helped us reach key milestones. Your help in reaching 50% of our participation goal unlocked a $4,000 challenge gift! We are nearly at $30,000 to support peer counselors and other much needed AAP programs.
Bruins are optimists- so let's keep striving for 100%, a historic number of gifts to AAP during UCLA's Centennial Celebration. Remember to share with friends and family that $1, $5 and $10 make a HUGE impact on drawing awareness to the great support AAP provides its more than 5,000 students each year.
Thank you and Happy New Year!
We're almost halfway to our goal! Because of you, participation in the AAP Spark giving campaign is soaring and programs like Day One will sustain the funds and awareness they need to make an impact.
The mission of VIPS Day One is to develop a pipeline for 9th-grade Black boys from high school into VIPS cohorts, through to college and graduate education. Day One mentors work with young Black males on their assigned campus and seek to foster a college-going culture within every student. During the academic year, mentors meet with students to go over their A-G requirements and counsel students on how to boost their competitive eligibility. In addition to their counseling, the mentors plan field trips that bring students to UCLA to shadow current students. In the summer, AAP hosts a weekend residential program titled Kulturally.Influencing.Ninth.Grade.Scholars (KINGS Summer). The program utilizes culturally relevant pedagogy designed to enrich students' Math, English, and creative skills.
Tr'Vel who currently serves as the Coordinator for the Day One program and also works as a mentor on the Rancho Dominguez campus shares, "we have increased Black male participation in VIPS mentorship by over 300, signing up over 170 freshmen this year. We've seen stronger rapport with our partnering sites and find that many students are more excited about attending college."
Thank you for outpouring support on #GivingTuesday. With your help, we reached our goal of 100 participants and surpassed expectations with nearly $19,000 raised in support of AAP programs.
We’re not stopping yet. With 14 days remaining in our campaign and a committed group of supporters behind us (that’s you!), we have no doubt that we can reach our participation goal. This week let's reach 258 gifts by December 20. If we reach this halfway milestone, a $4,000 challenge gift will be unlocked for AAP. Consider sharing our exciting accomplishments to date and our goal this week with your friends and family. A gift in any amount can have an immediate impact.
Tomorrow, UCLA's Academic Advancement Program will celebrate Giving Tuesday. After #BlackFriday and #CyberMonday, #GivingTuesday is our chance to engage the AAP community for an outpouring of support to benefit our current and future students.
Thanks to you, we are off to a great start having raised over $7,000 already. Your gifts, shares and spreading the word about this special opportunity to support AAP is working! Keep up this great energy and you'll help us reach 100 participants by the end of day tomorrow which will unlock a $3,000 challenge gift. Let's not stop there though. If we reach 258 participants, over half way to our goal, by the end of the week we'll unlock another $4,000.
