Riley "El Diablo" Kirkman Davis is awarded Rookie of the Year!

April 05, 2020

I bet you didn't think I'd be back so soon, and I was planning to give it a week before updating again, but turns out our rookie class is just too talented, and I'm most certainly not complaining.

Ultiworld is the premiere news site for Ultimate Frisbee and every year they give out awards at the end of our season, which has ended much sooner than expected, so the awards were released last week, and our very own Riley "El Diablo" Kirkman-Davis was awarded Rookie of the Year!

No one could be more deserving of this prestigious award. From the minute he stepped onto the field in September we knew he was going to do great things. I Could go on and on about his incredible skills on the field (He definitely could have gotten Offensive MVP for every tournament, and probably Defensive too). He is all over the field making big plays, and calm, confident throws to keep our offense running.

But what impresses me most about Riley is how he instantly stepped into a leadership role on this team, not caring that he was a freshman, he immediately jumped in to help wherever it was needed.

I asked him for a quote, and in typical Riley fashion, he is completely humble, focused on the team:

"I'm so happy to be playing for this team at such an exciting point in the program. I couldn't have imagined a better community to be a part of and I can't wait to see where this team goes."

I could rant about my love and respect for this shirt-biting guy for pages, but we'll keep it at that.

Check out Ultiworld's article: https://ultiworld.com/2020/04/02/2020-d-mens-rookie-year-presented-spin-ultimate/.

Please also enjoy these fun photoshop collages that prove I have way too much time on my hands these days.

Thank you as always for your support of the UCLA Ultimate Community, and Congratulations Again to Riley.

Stay Healthy and Stay Safe.

Long Overdue TOURNAMENT UPDATE: Smoke - Two Sanctioned Tournaments, Two Top Three Finishes

March 31, 2020

I promised you Tournament Updates, and I am long overdue on delivering, but Bryan "The Chef" Cloutier is back, ready to bring you some UCLA Ultimate Action!

On February 22nd, Smoke attended the Pomona Sweethearts 2020 Tournament, followed by the Claremont Ultimate Classic on February 29th.

As usual, the majority of this feedback comes from Smoke's amazing Alumni Coaches Mochi "Tux" Li and Evan "Dune" Soskin.

Sanctioned tournaments, meaning tournaments that USA Ultimate considers to be official, are rare for Developmental teams like Smoke. On back-to-back weekends in February, Smoke took advantage of these two tournaments to play competitive games against high quality teams, and also to develop as a team.

The first tournament was Pomona, and it served as a tryout tournament for many players. We have such a large interest in ultimate, that in order for Smoke to be competitive in later tournaments, we are forced to have a second round of cuts, simply to increase chemistry among players. Through the opportunities your support has opened up, we are looking into methods to expand our program capacity for the upcoming years while retaining the competitive nature across the board.

The Results:

11-3 win vs. Long Beach State University

8-5 loss vs. Arizona State B

7-6 win vs. Cal Poly-Pomona

The victory over Pomona was definitely the weekend highlight, as we battled back from being down two breaks to win on universe point. (Breaks are when the defense scores, universe is when it's tied and both teams only need one point to win. I've probably explained these things before, but just in case. Now you can go impress everyone with your ultimate lingo:)

In bracket play, Smoke lost 9-4 versus Occidental, and then beat Loyola Marymount University 11-4 to take 3rd place. A fantastic start to the back-to-back tournaments, where rookies got a lot of playing time and team chemistry improved significantly over the day.

And now to Claremont. This tournament was the first tournament played post-second cuts, with Smoke's "Sectionals Roster." Unfortunately, our season has come to an end before the Sectionals Tournament, but nevertheless, this roster got to play a fun and competitive tournament.

The Results:

10-3 loss vs. Occidental

11-3 win vs. UCSD B

In the crossover round, Smoke played Loyola Marymount, and was down 3-6 at half, before breaking five times in a row to win 8-6, now that's what we call a comeback. Led by tough person-on-person defense and people making tough throws when it counted, Smoke scored a quality victory.

In the Semifinals versus Claremont, Smoke went up 6-3, but some tough defense from Claremont forced universe point, and Claremont's offense ended up punching it in to win 8-7. Since there were only six teams in the tournament, and Smoke had already previous beaten LMU, Smoke claimed 3rd place again.

Players of the Tournaments (Cumulative):

Offensive: Brady "Ransom" Coulter. We have a big and talented rookie class that is learning fast and stepping up. Ransom leads the pack on offense, He's fast and has great timing on all of his cuts. He can go deep and just as easily make a hard under cut and leaving his defender in the dust.

Defensive: Theodore "Cubone" Herring. Whether it's person or zone defense, Cubone is always making the people who he's guarding work. He constantly adjusts his positioning to stop the next throw, and he even had a game saving block against Pomona that led to the win.

Rookie: Kashi "Skittles" Deleede. He plays crazy defense, and his speed lets him keep up with the other teams fastest players. He has shown tremendous improvement in such a short amount of time. He even had two diving blocks to prevent two scores.

I know the situation is far from ideal right now, and all of us at UCLA Ultimate hope you are staying healthy and safe and of course, as always, thank you for your support.

Please enjoy the attached video by Henry "Rex" Kou for some highlights from Claremont!

Stanford Invite Update is on the way, and I will continue to try and find some fun throwbacks to post as Spring Quarter continues remotely.

UCLA Men's Ultimate COVID-19 Update

March 18, 2020

Hello to all members of the UCLA Ultimate Frisbee Community,

If you did not already know, your incredible generosity in donating both your time and money makes you an automatic part of this community, so thank you again.

I sincerely wish this update did not need to be published and came at a much brighter time, but unfortunately that is simply not the case. I am sorry for being behind on updating, with all that has been going on, including finals, my free time has been very limited, but now that finals are done and I am preparing to head home for Spring Quarter, an update has been long overdue.

I will just jump right into it, Club Sports have been canceled by UCLA for the remainder of the academic year, so our season is over. USA Ultimate, the governing body of our sport, has also canceled all tournaments up through May 10th at the absolute earliest, so our season would have likely have been over either way.

With the season being over, I would like to reassure you that all the money and support you have put into this program through this Spark campaign will not be wasted. A lot of that money was helping to fund a trip to Texas to compete in Centex. We have been able to get refunds on a lot of the expenses from the trip and are working with Club Sports to try to get as much as possible back. And that money is not just sitting in our account, your donations have been used throughout the year on tournament bid fees, hotels, and transportation. Smaug's Stanford Invitational Tournament alone cost around $1500, and we were able to pay for that almost entirely with your donations. Furthermore, since the money is no longer going to Centex, we were able to use some of that money to help with jersey costs, which is something we have never been able to do before.

Despite the unfortunate ending to our season, nothing can destroy the memories we have made, and the lifetime bonds and friendships we have formed. We look onto and prepare for next season with our heads held high, ready to build on the legacy and foundation from this year.

With that in mind and all the negativity in the world at this moment, I think it is important to look back on all of the positive, amazing accomplishments of UCLA Men's Ultimate this year:

First and foremost, we did our first ever Spark Campaign and raised over $10,000! That is absolutely incredible, and we could not be more thankful for your support.

UCLA's A Team, Smaug, was the 10th ranked team nationally, staying within the top 20 all season, and we are currently ranked 16th nationally, by far the highest we have been ranked.

Our B Team, Smoke, is also one of the top 10 ranked developmental teams in the country.

We had over 150 at our first practice in the fall, and the interest has grown so much that Smoke takes almost 30 people to every tournament.

We fully planned out and funded an out-of-state tournament, which is a capability we wouldn't have had if not for your generosity.

Supporting a program of over 75 kids who share an affinity for tossing around a plastic disc. (I just realized I said kids instead of "student athletes.") The tone just fit I guess, because we truly are a family:)

Ultimately (hah. Yes I will continue to reuse this joke), it has been a fantastic year with an unfortunate end, and the only place to go from here is up.

We would like to say thank you to all of our seniors, captains, and coaches for being integral leaders and mentors throughout this season. Seniors especially, all the time, grit, and effort you have put into this program has shaped it into what it is today. We will carry on your legacy.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who participated in our season in any way. Whether it was watching our games, cheering from your home, and especially to all of you who helped us achieve our goals this season through our Spark Campaign, thank you.

Stay healthy and stay safe during these trying and difficult times.

Yeah Smaug and Go Bruins!

Sincerely,

Bryan "The Chef" Cloutier and your Spark Campaign team Bryson "P.h.o.e.n.i.x" Levisay and Mark "Rambo' Farber

P.S. I still have two more tournament updates to post in the upcoming week about Smoke's two one Day Tournaments and Smaug's performance at Stanford Invite. Those will be coming your way shortly, I just wanted to make sure this update got out first.

UCLA Men's Ultimate Game Livestream Tomorrow Morning March 7th!

March 06, 2020

Today is a different kind of tournament update, as it is happening before the tournament. Smaug is currently on our way to Stevinson California to compete at Stanford Invitational this upcoming weekend, March 7th and 8th.

The reason for this special tournament update is because we were just informed that our 10:30am Pacific Time game versus Tufts tomorrow (March 7th) morning will be livestreamed by Ultiworld!

So if you happen to have a free Saturday Morning and want to watch some live UCLA Men's Ultimate, you can do so at http://ultiworld.com/live. Their entire live stream schedule for the weekend can be found in the attached picture (Courtesy of Ultiworld's Instagram). Also enjoy a squad of Smauggies taking the big van up for the weekend:)

Once again, thank you for your support and allowing us to accommodate such a large team for these competitive tournaments!

I am slightly behind on true Tournament Updates, as Smoke just had back to back One Day Tournaments, so there's a double tournament update on the way, and then I will also be posting a full recap of Stanford Invite as well.  So if you're craving some ultimate, we've got plenty headed your way!

TOURNAMENT UPDATE: Smaug Plays Close Games with Top Teams at President's Day Invitational

February 23, 2020

Thank you! I just thought I would get it out of the way at the beginning this time. Every tournament we go to would not be possible or as affordable for players without your generous donations.

Over President's Day Weekend Smaug went head to head with top ranked teams from around the country at President's Day Invitational in San Diego. This tournament spans all three days of the long weekend, Saturday through Monday, so all of our players showed extreme resilience and grit in playing hard for the entire weekend.

Saturday started off like any other tournament, with pool play, where we went 2-1 on the day, beating UCSB and Oregon State 11-7 and 12-10 respectively, and then losing to Colorado 12-7. Overall, we were happy with our Saturday results, and everyone showed tremendous focus, especially as the wind conditions continued to vary throughout the day.

We started off Sunday with a hard fought loss to Oregon 15-11. While we obviously would have preferred the win, we played them really close for them being a top 10 team in the country. In our next game we played Cal Poly SLO, and the first half got off to a rough start, with us being down 8-3. In the second half, however, we really opened up our roster, and everyone played hard. They brought that intensity we had been lacking in the first half and while we still ended up losing, the final score was only 11-8, so we really battled back. In our third game of the day we played Stanford, and again got off to a rocky start, but by trusting our whole roster and grinding our points, we made up for our slow start and won 9-7.

Next, we played in Prequarters, on Sunday afternoon versus UC San Diego. Our teamwork was really clicking on offense and we were playing hard, shut down defense, and won 15-6.

Our Monday morning Quaterfinals battle versus Colorado was probably the best we have looked as a team so far this season. They are a top level team, and we were right there competing with them the whole way, though we did end up losing 10-8. I think this loss really showed us how close we truly are to all of these top level teams.

Our day was far from over though, as we immediately followed with another rematch, this time versus Oregon State. Having just played such a close game with Colorado, we struggled early to bring that same intensity early. Though we brought it back second half, we could not quite make up for our slow start, and ended up losing 10-8, in what was definitely our most painful loss of the weekend. The show must go on though, and we played Stanford in our third rematch of the day for 7th place, and beat them handily, 14-6.

Two day tournaments are hard enough, and adding that third day really tested our endurance and focus as a team, but overall we fought hard and gave close games to every team we played, especially those ranked higher nationally, and utilized our fully roster to really unite us as a team and highlight where we most need to grow.

Players of the Tournament:

Offensive: Derek "Maverick" Vance. He was all over the field on offense, making strong, decisive cuts when we needed them, and also coming back to be close to the disc and make hard throws.  He always gives 110%, really setting the standard for everyone on the field.

Defensive: Paul "Frozone" Pfeiffer. One of our captains and biggest leaders on and off the field, he had the most blocks on the weekend, constantly challenging opposing players to make tough catches, and running through and getting the block if they hesitated. He was also incredible in the air.

Rookie: Joseph "Hatchet" Thian. While not the flashiest player on the field, he was always super reliable, making catches, throws, and blocks. He even jumped and grabbed an opposing deep throw out of the air.

Another huge thank you goes out to all the family and friends who came out to watch, your support means so much and really helps keep us going.

Smoke just competed in a one day tournament on February 22nd, so you can expect another update in the coming week.

Finally, one of our Smoke Captains and Spark Leaders Mark "Rambo" Farber, made a short video of Smaug's performance from Santa Barbara Invitational a couple weeks ago, which I think really highlights the culture we try to bring to every game of combining fun and silliness with competition.

Yeah Smaug and Go Bruins!

TOURNAMENT UPDATE: Smoke Battles Through a Tough First Day at President’s Day Qualifiers

February 09, 2020

Even with midterm season being upon us, and night temperatures reaching a record low fifties here in SoCal, UCLA Men's Ultimate is still just as committed, and this past weekend, February 1st and 2nd, Smoke headed up to Cal Poly San Louis Obispo to compete in President's Day Qualifiers. I'll let you guess where the donations came from for the bid fee:) Thank You again for your generosity!

These next sections come with input from Smoke coaches and UCLA Ultimate Alumni: Mochi "Tux" Li and Evan "Dune" Soskin.

Pres Day Quals has always been Smoke's toughest tournament; it is the only tournament where we match up against higher tier A teams. Coupled with the 4am wake up call and the drive to SLO, Smoke struggled on the first day. Chemistry and defending more athletic player on under cuts were two of our biggest areas for improvement. Nevertheless, Smoke played hard and grinded out every point. A long and tough day ended with an 0-4 record, but knowing that if a few things went our way, we would be in bracket play.

First Day Results:

4-13 loss vs Santa Clara

6-9 loss vs UCSB-B

6-9 loss vs Cal State Long Beach

7-9 loss vs ASU-B

We learned and moved on. We went into Sunday embodying the 0-0 game to 1 mentality, basically highlighting the importance of learning from mistakes, but not getting too caught up in them and playing every point like it is game point. Smoke had to fight hard for every single point and every single score. Nothing was given to us, we earned it. The chemistry was much better and we locked in on defense.

We started off Sunday with a win, beating San Jose State 11-6, and then following with an 8-3 victory over USC's B Team. And we capped off our Sunday with a revenge win over UCSB-B to take 17th place. And when you come in expected to get 21st place, taking 17th and playing competitive games against A teams is a productive weekend.

Overall, much was learned from everyone, including the coaching staff. 28 players is a lot to bring to tournaments, but we are thankful for your donations allowing us to be able to take so many players and expose them to the amazing sport of ultimate. This added exposure will only aid our team in growth for future tournaments.

Along with the Smoke Coaches, the Players of the Tournament were chosen by captains David "Rust" Yee, David "Quartz" Curry, and Mark "Rambo" Farber.

Offensive: Zach "Proctor" Loran. He is a steady handler who we can rely on to run and take charge of the horizontal or vertical stack. He was crucial to us getting upwind breaks, which are significantly more difficult, as throwing a disc when the wind is against you is a tough skill to learn.

Defensive: Arun "Ajax" Bhattasali. Layout block against USC. What more do you need? He also stepped up significantly this weekend as a veteran leader and aggressively hunted for that block.

Rookie: Zack "Techron" Hirschorn. On universe point against UCSB on the second day, his diving block saved possession at the front of the endzone and ensured the score for the win. He always plays his heart out, making big plays and especially big throws when we needed them. He also had a layout block against ASU.

There's no break in the action as we continue to put your generous donations to use (THANK YOU!), competing at high level tournaments. Over President's Day Weekend, Smaug ventures to UC San Diego to compete in the three day President's Day Invitational tournament.

Yeah Smaug and Go Bruins!

TOURNAMENT UPDATE: Smaug Beats Cal to Take 3rd at Santa Barbara Invitational

February 02, 2020

We're back! This time it's our A Team, Smaug making the early morning drive up to UC Santa Barbara to compete in the Santa Barbara Invitational Tournament this past weekend. Thank you for all your donations that helped us get there! We cannot express our gratitude enough, so we will continue to keep expressing it as much as we can:)

Saturday was pool play, where Smaug went 3-1, losing only to BYU, the second best team in the nation.

Saturday Pool Play:

12-11 win vs. UCSD

13-11 win vs. UBC

13-7 win vs. Case Western

13-7 loss vs. BYU

One of the coolest things about this tournament is that we get to play teams from all over the country, who we don't normally play. Just on Saturday alone, we played teams from Ohio, Utah, and even Canada (UBC).

On our results in pool play, overall we showed strength and discipline in being able to fight out some close games, though we definitely feel we could have performed better in some games. But at the end of the day, we're never going to be disappointed with three wins.

We started off Sunday beating Dartmouth in the Quarterfinals 13-9.  We lost to Washington 13-5 in the semifinals, who was ranked 10th in the nation and went on to win the tournament. So while the fact both of our losses this weekend came to top tier teams is something to be proud of, neither of our scores in either loss reflect our best performance and we want to be playing close games with these teams.

We topped off our weekend beating Cal 12-11 and taking third place! It was a hard fought game all the way through, and it took the whole team playing hard on every defensive point and disciplined on every offensive point to grind out the victory.

The third place victory is a great start to our season, though everyone is still looking to improve and get better. And your Spark donations are helping us to do that as we have now confirmed a spot at Centex, a premiere Ultimate tournament in March (22nd-23rd), where we will get the chance to play more teams outside of California and get some quality high level, competitive games. Before Spark, the thought of flying to a tournament was simply too expensive and overwhelming, but now that we can use some of your money to supplement flights, hotels, and rental cars, it makes this opportunity possible, so thank you!

Players of the Tournament:

Offensive: Austin "M.A.F.I.A" Hwang. (Senior) He always gives 110% effort when he's on the field, constantly diving and making great throws when we need them. But his cutting is probably his best attribute, as he constantly gets open on shorter cuts underneath, which we need to get our offense going.

Defensive: David "Avalanche" Dumas. (Sophomore). He is all over the field, constantly out jumping people when the other team tries to throw deep, or diving in front of shorter cuts. Oftentimes you'll think the other team has an open score and he will just come flying out of nowhere and get the block.

Rookie: Riley "El Diablo" Kirkman-Davis. (Freshman). I'm going to be honest, he probably could have won either of the other two categories. He had an absolutely standout performance, taking charge on both offense and defense with his massive throws and layout defenses. He may just be a rookie, but he already has a big role on this team, both game wise and leadership wise.

Also, a major shoutout to all of our rookies, who have taken on big roles early, and played their hearts out every time they're on the field. Especially as a new player, getting put in such important situations can be nerve wracking, but they all handled it with ease, and were an integral part of our third place finish.

Another huge shoutout to UCLA's Women's Ultimate Team for getting second on the women's side of Santa Barbara Invitational. We got to play two of our Sunday games right next to them, you better believe there were a lot of 8 claps.

If you're tired of us saying thank you, we apologize because we're just going to keep saying it. Thank You! The ceiling on our performance really feels limitless this year, and that is all thanks to the opportunities unlock through your generosity.

Winter Quarter is almost all ultimate, all the time, as Smoke is currently up to Cal Poly San Louis Obispo this weekend to compete in President's Day Qualifiers.

Yeah Smaug and Go Bruins!

TOURNAMENT UPDATE: Smoke Takes Second at Santa Barbara Developmental Qualifier

January 16, 2020

Bryan "The Chef" Cloutier here to start your new year off with some UCLA Ultimate!

It's a new year, and a new quarter, and we start off fast here at Men's Ultimate with our developmental team, Smoke (because we ultimate players enjoy naming our teams funny things), heading up to UCSB to compete in Santa Barbara Qualifiers this past weekend. Your Spark donations paid for the tournament bid fee so we could attend this tournament, so thank you!

We started off the first day strong, getting four dominating wins:

13-2 vs. UC Davis

13-5 vs. UCI

13-4 vs. SB High

12-8 vs. UCSD

Especially for being the first tournament Smoke played together, and for playing from 2pm to 10pm, that's quite a start, and it put us in semi-finals the next morning.

These next sections come from Smoke coaches and UCLA Ultimate Alumni: Mochi "Tux" Li and Evan "Dune" Soskin.

In a back and forth semis, Smoke was down 6-7 at half, but with some defensive adjustments and tough man defense, we won on universe 9-8 vs UCSB. Then, we traded shot for shot in the finals, but SLO's track stars and experience proved to be the difference as they won 9-5.

Overall, we showed tremendous growth and progression this weekend, but we still have lots of work to do in the coming weeks. We have a solid core of veteran leadership and determined rookies. We don't rely on one person to run our offense or to generate a turnover; we have the ability to throw out multiple different sets of players who can both defend and score. We can be 28 people deep. (A fact which is also thanks to your donations! We are able to pay for the transportation and hotels for them all because of your generosity, so thank you again!)

Along with the Smoke coaches, the Players of the Tournament were chosen by the captains David "Rust" Yee, David "Quartz" Curry, and Mark "Rambo" Farber.

Offensive MVP of the Tournament: David "Shazam" Dinklage. He was basically unstoppable cutting deep, so much so that his defender would play five yards off him and he'd still run past him.

Defensive MVP of the Tournament: Noe "Geodude" Motamedi. He had a pure layout D against UC Davis in their end zone to set up a score for us. Additionally, he played tough and solid man defense on opposing handlers.

Best Rookie Performance of the Tournament: Skye "Link" Grim. He played his heart out every time he was on and had the most D's overall. He also showed tremendous field awareness.

A huge congratulations to Smoke on a second place finish in their first official tournament of the year! And a big shoutout to all of the rookies for playing super hard throughout the long weekend. But of course, the biggest shoutout goes to you, as without your generosity it would not be possible to attend these tournaments and to take such a large team. We all couldn't be more thankful!

Look out for more ultimate coming your way soon, as our A Team, Smaug, heads up to UC Santa Barbara on January 25-26th for our first tournament of the year: Santa Barbara Invitational!

Yeah Smaug and Go Bruins!

THANK YOU FOR A TRULY ULTIMATE CAMPAIGN! GOAL REACHED!

December 07, 2019

No, we're not sorry for the title.

Thank you to everyone who supported our project for helping us to reach our goal of $10,000! That is absolutely incredible! Whether you donated personally, shared, or simply viewed our fundraising page, thank you. This was all accomplished through your generous donations of both time and money and we could not be more grateful.

We started out this project with a goal of raising $5,000 to help us pay back early season expenses that we had already incurred or incurred during Fall Quarter before dues are charged: bid fees to two tournaments, transportation and housing at those two tournaments, the hosting of our own tournament, paying for coaches' parking passes so they can park on campus to attend practice, and 150 news discs to start the new year with some fresh discs (Because Ultimate Discs have the unfortunate tendency of wanting to fly over fences or into trees).

But due to incredible early support, we reached $5,000 before the official launch of the campaign, so we raised the goal to $10,000 to try and get any extra money we could. And a month later, we have not only reached our goal, but we've also surpassed it?! That is more than we ever could have hoped and it is all due to your generosity and donations, thank you so much. This money will help to pay for future tournament bid fees, which will help keep dues low. Additionally, we can start supplementing team members for team meals bought on tournaments, something that players originally had to pay for out of pocket. While this is not a major expense, with multiple meals per tournament and making sure you are getting the proper nutrients, it definitely adds up. Finally, the success of this campaign has allowed us to consider attending a high level tournament somewhere else in the nation besides California. This will give us the opportunity to play high caliber teams that we do not usually get exposure to, and make the cost affordable for flights and housing for our players. We do not know which tournament we will be attending, though we are currently looking into Northwest Challenge and Centex, both of which would take place near the end of our winter quarter.

We do not have anymore tournaments this quarter, as it is almost over. But we start immediately Week One of Winter Quarter with our B Team attending a tournament in Santa Barbara Qualifier and the A Team attending the Santa Barbara Invitational two weeks later, and maybe our B team too, if they win Qualifiers.

So while this will be the last update for this quarter, it will definitely not be the last one of the school year as we will continue to update you on our tournament progress throughout the year.

Have a wonderful holiday season, and thank you again for your donations and extraordinary generosity!

Sincerely,

Bryson "p.h.o.e.n.i.x" Levisay, Mark "Rambo" Farber, Bryan "The Chef" Cloutier, and All of UCLA Men's Club Ultimate Frisbee.

(Oh did we mention we all have nicknames?)

P.S. Because written words only mean so much we have attached a video of the team expressing their thanks as well. Please enjoy, it's for you! With the rain and it being the Friday before Finals Week here at UCLA, our numbers are slightly lower than usual, but know that your donations impact over 75 active members, so thank you again! But don't take it from us, take it from the players themselves!

LAYING OUT FOR #GIVINGTUESDAY!

December 03, 2019

Thank you to everyone for your incredible support throughout our Spark campaign! Thanks to your support, we have raised over $9,000 for our tournaments, hotels, and equipment. That's amazing!! We could not be more grateful.

We are only 9% away from our goal of $10,000! All of this money goes directly back to the players to help keep dues low so we can remain the cheapest UCLA Club Sport that travels and keep the incredible sport of ultimate affordable and accessible to all.

In honor of Giving Tuesday and the final week of our campaign, we have included a video of one of our Junior Team members, Jack Brewer, laying out to catch a disc for the score! Laying out is ultimate lingo for a diving catch, now you can use the term and impress your friends:)

This catch came from a Mixed Tournament, where we combined with our UCLA Women's Ultimate Team and played against other mixed college teams. We took 3rd place at the tournament, beating out UCSC, Cal State Long Beach,  and Loyola Marymount University.

We've mentioned Giving Tuesday a couple of times, so what is it? #GivingTuesday is the non-profit response to consumer pseudo shopping holidays, like Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. It was created to demonstrate that the holiday season isn’t just about giving presents, but about giving back. It falls every year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

So if you are able, please share our project and this amazing holiday on social media so people are aware of this incredible opportunity to give back.

Thank you for all your support and GO BRUINS!

KFALL TOURNAMENT AND $7000 IN FIRST WEEK!

November 14, 2019

Thank you for the incredible support in just the first week of our campaign!

We are 30% away from our $10,000 goal and have already raised over $7,000! This can cover tournament costs (Hotels, transportation, and bid fees) for our first two tournaments this Fall, KFall and Huckfest, which are before club dues.

We couldn't be more grateful for your incredible support! Please continue to promote and share our campaign so it can reach as many people as possible and we can help keep UCLA Ultimate affordable for everyone!

This past weekend UCLA Men's Ultimate attended KFall, a tournament in San Diego. With a record of 7-1 on the weekend, UCLA crushed the competition including USC, UCSD, ASU, SDSU, and the San Diego Club Team Streetgang,  before falling to Cal Poly SLO 7-11 in a hard fought finals. Though everyone there wanted the win, we are still immensely proud of everyone's performance, especially the rookies, who played hard and performed well at only their second college level tournament.

We can't wait to attend more tournaments throughout the season. Thanks for helping us get there!

We have a traditional cheer we do at the end of every tournament to close out the weekend and remind everyone that regardless of the results UCLA Ultimate is here to stay, and we wanted to share that with you as a thank you for all of the continuing support. Please enjoy the video, led by one of our amazing captains Bryson!
