(Internship Alumni Networking Event c. 2000)
Fifty years ago the UCLA Washington Internship Program was but a dream in the mind of founder Robert Michaels, the first UCLA Student Welfare Commissioner on a newly reorganized Student Legislative Council. In the summer of 1965 with the aid of this Student Council and the UCLA Administration, through the assistance of future Chancellor Charles Young, Michaels spent the summer in Washington, DC, and came back with 50 Government Internship Positions in Washington, DC, for the next summer. During the summer of 1966, Michaels, the newly elected Student Body President, along with ASUCLA Board of Control Chairman, Roger Howard, led a team of 55 UCLA Students back to Washington, for what has become a program that has survived and thrived these 50 years, spreading into other forms of internship programs, both for academic credit and internship experience opportunities all over the world.
Several years after the founding of the internship program the UCLA Student Activities Office, under the leadership of Alex White, took on the supervision of the program where it continued to thrive. After Alex retired, serving for almost 25 years as the Director of the Washington Internship program, a thankful group of former Interns established the Alex White Scholarship to help future UCLA Interns have this marvelous experience.
Through the expansion of the Alex White Scholarship and the creation of other scholarships, fellowships and financing opportunities, the responsibility has now fallen on the Internship Alumni Network, (“IAN”), to make this dream a reality for every UCLA student!
Recently an informal group of UCLA campus leaders, all involved in various internship programs on the UCLA Campus, gathered together to further the ultimate goal of providing an internship experience as part of every UCLA student’s undergraduate experience. Our goal is to further establish a financial fund to aid students in their internship endeavors, as well as providing for an expansion of UCLA Internship opportunities both on an academic basis as well as an experiential educational basis.
