Our Crowdfunding Groups
Twelve young women who were recent UCLA graduates got together in 1936 to found Gold Shield Alumnae of UCLA. They wanted to continue their service to the university and their friendship with each other. They were among the first “UCLA Optimists” as amid the Great Depression they put on their hats and gloves and started hosting tea salons which included UCLA faculty members as speakers. By 1939 they had raised $300 to fund our first two $150 scholarships for entering freshmen.

Gold Shield’s continued efforts of fund raising have brought endowments, bequests, and donations from members, friends, and families so that we can now award UCLA Alumni Scholarships on an annual basis. With 140 members, Gold Shield continually educates its membership so they are up to date on matters of vital interest to the university. Gold Shield has also supported ethnic studies, oral history and faculty awards through their fund-raising efforts. Gold Shield’s longstanding and unwavering commitment to UCLA is one reason among many that they are also the University’s 2015 Network of the Year!
This year’s Gold Shield Alumnae SPARK campaign plans to raise $8,000 for two additional $4,000 transfer scholarships. These scholarships are focused on supporting incoming transfer students from California Community Colleges. Transfer students often take a longer journey to complete their education as work and family obligations as well as military service can interrupt the goal of a UCLA degree. Their hearts and minds are set on us, but financing the dream is too often their weightiest issue. Your investment in their UCLA education can't help but make you feel optimistic about the future.
