Virtual UCLA CORE Kidney Health Fair 2020

Our CORE Kidney Program is involved in a number of outreach events throughout the year. The Kidney Fair is our premier annual fundraising event, and all proceeds go to support our CORE Kidney mission. This year, it comes at a critical time as we all face the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Medical experts are working on novel strategies in managing kidney disease, directly or indirectly related to COVID-19.

Virtual UCLA CORE Kidney Health Fair 2020

While it won’t be on the beach this year, UCLA CORE Kidney Health Fair on May 17, 2020 is going virtual and with that, global. This will be our first ever virtual kidney health fair!

The focus this year is not only on the urgent need to relay new information about kidney disease treatment during the pandemic, but also will lead with the newest research findings about COVID-19 and its effects on kidney disease among the most ill.

Hear from experts on a wide range of topics including:

  • COVID-19 and Kidneys
  • Staying healthy during the pandemic
  • Kidney Health Initiative
  • Powerful patient stories
  • Kidney Transplantation
  • Home Dialysis
  • And much more...

Past fairs on the beach have attracted several thousand people. By going virtual, with a global outreach, UCLA CORE Kidney Fair 2020 will have a much bigger reach and many more people’s lives will be touched.

VIRTUAL PROGRAM

  • Our one-and-a-half-hour program will feature medical experts, living donors and recipients’ powerful stories, a Nobel Laureate and news personalities; all working together to fight kidney disease in this new medical landscape.
  • The event will end with a virtual 2K run, featuring the runners live on a virtual video wall as they start their run in their neighborhood; and a call to action for funding research.
  • This will be a very festive and successful occasion to increase kidney disease awareness. Please join us along with your family, friends – including four-legged ones!

ABOUT THE UCLA CORE KIDNEY PROGRAM

The UCLA CORE Kidney Program was created by Anjay Rastogi, MD PhD in 2016. Dr. Anjay Rastogi, the creator and director of the UCLA CORE Kidney Program, is a Professor of Medicine and Clinical Chief of Nephrology at UCLA. Our mission is to improve healthcare delivery toward all patients with kidney disease by implementing our CORE values of Clinical Excellence, Outreach, Research and Education.

Our goal is to establish a UCLA CORE Kidney Center that will focus on integrative medicine, with emphasis on prevention and education, so patients can become their own best advocates. This program continues to make great strides in serving our patients, their families and the community. During the last year, we coordinated and hosted a Symposium for healthcare providers, a health fair with over 1,500 attendees, monthly UCLA Webinar's available on YouTube, and many Educational talks and meetings which emphasized kidney disease. We visited other medical and community practices to discuss the different types of kidney diseases. We also enhanced our website on request of our attendees and also started a new Kidney Donor Konnect Facebook page.

We promote the UCLA CORE Kidney Program through our website, by visiting other nephrology practices and healthcare providers. Many healthcare providers are unfamiliar with the different kidney diseases, home dialysis, and most importantly, proactive measures available to delay or prevent kidney disease.

There is a lack of knowledge and experience needed to diagnose and treat different kidney diseases. Our goal is to improve this situation at UCLA through formal educational seminars. By educating healthcare providers, the community as a whole will benefit from better patient care and outcomes. We are also educating our future healthcare providers, UCLA medical students and undergraduates who are also heavily involved in the UCLA CORE Kidney Program.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to improve healthcare delivery by implementing our CORE values of Clinical excellence, Outreach, Research, and Education. Our focus is on integrative medicine, with emphasis on prevention and education, so patients can become their own best advocates.

We are implementing our CORE values through the following:

Clinical Excellence. Our goal is to provide comprehensive care to our patient population through clinical programs that focus on specific disease states. We have already started programs for Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), Alport Disease, Fabry’s Disease, Home Dialysis, Living Donor, Diabetic Kidney Disease, as well as clinics for UTI and Hypertension and they are very successful. The aim of these programs is for a multidisciplinary team to work together and to breakdown the silos in present day healthcare system through integrative care. We plan to start many more in the upcoming year.

OutreachWe have created and hosted the 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019 UCLA Kidney Fairs, and October 2015 UCLA Kidney Event. The CORE Kidney Program collaborates with OneLegacy/Donate Life, the Annual PKD Walks in Los Angeles, and is also heavily involved in events that serve Hispanic and disadvantaged communities. At these events, community nephrologists and healthcare providers volunteer to provide education on kidney health for the general public, patients, their families and friends. These outreach events raise awareness about kidney disease in the general public in an effort to increase patient involvement and disease prevention. Our office has participated in many other events and plans to continue hosting events in the upcoming year.

Research. We are advancing our current understanding of various disease states through research in both the basic, clinical and translational sciences. We have multiple ongoing trials that address dialysis, diabetes, anemia, Fabry’s Disease, PKD, and hypertension.

Education.  Free quarterly events such as UCLA Kidney Education Enhancement Program (UKEEP) are hosted for patients and their family and friends to learn about kidney disease holistically. In addition, we have monthly webinars with different topics that has a global reach. The goal of these education and outreach programs is to make patients and their loved ones a part of the decision-making team.

As the founder and director of Bruin Beans Health Club (BBHC), my aim is to foster future leaders in healthcare. BBHC is an undergraduate led club that works with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals while offering mentorship opportunities, volunteering, and workshops to undergraduates. The mission of BBHC is to bridge the gap of misinformation surrounding kidney health through effective communication with patients or loved ones with kidney disease.

Our ultimate goal is to set up a UCLA CORE Kidney Center where we can provide comprehensive care to our kidney patients and their entire families, starting from pre-diagnosis to transplant. The Kidney Center will embody all of the values that the CORE Kidney Program stands for and the mission of UCLA Health: healing humankind one patient at a time.
