#BruinStrong: Economic Crisis Response Fund

UCLA is #BruinStrong

On March 13th, UCLA’s administration, campus leaders and public health officials made the difficult choice to extend remote learning through the end of spring quarter 2020 to limit the spread of COVID-19 and to protect the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff, while maintaining UCLA’s exemplary educational standards.

Students have been asked to return home to learn remotely if they are able. Students who must stay at UCLA will be cared for, protected and sheltered. Faculty and staff are rising to the occasion, learning new ways in which to serve and keep the UCLA enterprise running while protecting themselves, their families and the community.

Bruins near and far are being asked to learn and work differently during these uncertain times, but some things remain constant: the bonds of our UCLA family, our willingness to respond to challenges with optimism and generosity, and our unwavering commitment to supporting students.

As in any time of crisis, the UCLA community responds by asking what they can do to help. Here’s how:

Responding to Economic Crises

UCLA's Economic Crisis Response Fund provides direct financial support to students who are experiencing hardships due to a crisis or catastrophic event that impacts their continued success at UCLA.

In response to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, the Economic Crisis Response Team (ECRT) is utilizing funding to support UCLA students facing unprecedented challenges, including:

- Loss of wages in hourly or part-time work

- Unanticipated travel costs

- Food and housing expenses

- Supplies, hygiene products, and other basic needs

- Other unexpected costs arising from the recent and severe changes to daily life

How You Can Help

The Economic Crisis Response Fund is supported entirely by members of the Bruin community like you, and a gift of any amount helps meet a student’s time-sensitive need. With your support, the multi-disciplinary team of staff and faculty who administer the fund can act quickly to fulfill requests from students.

Your generosity will go a long way to helping Bruins severely impacted by this ongoing public health crisis stay on track to graduate. Please join us in demonstrating how the global UCLA family can come together to be #BruinStrong.

Your Gift's Immediate Impact

A gift of any amount is going to make meaningful and immediate difference to help Bruins overcome severe financial hardships they might be experiencing as result of COVID-19. Here are just a few of the students you can support:

“I work hard every week so I have money for food and rent. Without my job, I do not know what I will do. My parents are currently helping my 94-year-old grandma who is sick which means I cannot go home to cut costs in fear of COVID-19 spread, and it also means they do not have extra money to give me as they are covering many of her medical expenses. Any help from the Bruin community would be greatly appreciated by me and my family.

“I am a full-time student who works to provide for my mother and myself. I was a teacher’s assistant at a middle school but I'm now unable to work. My mother is also not able to work her minimum wage job because of closures. We cannot pay our bills and buy enough groceries. We already live paycheck to paycheck and now there are no paychecks. We feel so alone and hopeless right now.”

“I am very concerned about how I will go about paying my rent and covering my other necessities. My sister is immunocompromised and I am currently practicing social distancing to protect her and my family. It is difficult enough to focus on being a student on top of questioning how I will be able to pay rent in the upcoming months without employment.”

Thank You. Together we are #BruinStrong.

Thank you for your support of UCLA students and thank you for being part of the Bruin family. Together we can rise to the challenge of supporting one another during these difficult and uncertain times.
