The Crisis: A Global Pandemic Is Here
On March 11, The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus/COVID-19 epidemic a pandemic. COVID-19 is one of the most urgent public health crises in generations; we must act now to understand pathogenesis, infection, transmission, containment, and mitigation to halt this deadly virus.
Los Angeles is the frontline of community transmission. Scientists and medical and public-health professionals have been preparing for such a pandemic and are working together creatively to tackle this novel pathogen, learn from it, beat it, and prevent new outbreaks in Los Angeles and around the world.
COVID-19 Coronavirus Research at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital
Our physician-scientists are actively engaging in a variety of innovative, multi-disciplinary research activities to better understand, develop treatments, and mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus/COVID-19 as well as other infectious diseases. Several research studies are currently underway at UCLA, including but not limited to: creating an international database tracking coronavirus cases in children and pregnant women; developing a serologic test for COVID-19; studying all hospitalized COVID-19 patients at UCLA Health to better understand the virus, the immune response, prognostic factors and biomarkers; finding therapies for pregnant women and children; and testing all healthcare workers who are exposed to COVID-19.
The Impact
Gifts to this fund will support current and future research projects around the novel COVID-19 coronavirus and other infectious diseases in children. Philanthropic funds are crucial to ensure that we can continue to engage in a variety of studies to understand, treat and combat this novel disease as well as future health pandemics that threaten the lives of our most vulnerable populations.
