Making a Difference in the Lives of Patients

Hello! My name is Ian Chen, a Mattel Youth Ambassador who understands what it’s like to spend numerous hours in the hospital. For two years, my grandfather underwent treatment for prostate ductal cancer at UCLA Medical Center. As a young child, I remember spending many days with him at the hospital from his doctor visits to surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and trips to the ER and hospital. I look back today with greater appreciation for measures that were taken to improve the quality of care of both patient and their families. I recall the comfort of Maddie’s Room while awaiting surgery results, the puzzles we made at the radiation center, the portable video game console for kids in the ER, and the many professionals who made a difference in the our lives during a very difficult time for my grandfather.

This year, on the 10th anniversary of my grandfather’s passing, I am dedicating my time to making a difference in the lives of young patients at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital where critically ill young patients who often need to cope with long-term treatments are met with compassion and love. Please join me and donate to improve the quality of care for these young patients, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when certain hospital activities may be limited.

All funds donated will directly support programs at Mattel Children’s Hospital focused on improving the physical and emotional care of young patients. The hospital relies on our support to provide certain services including care packages, holiday festivities, birthday celebrations, arts and music. Please share my fundraising page with friends and family who may be looking for ways to support a community during the pandemic. Together we can make a difference in helping young patients overcome their challenging journey.

Thank you for your time and support!
