First-Generation Awareness Week

Being the first to go to college can be both empowering and challenging for a lot of students. At UCLA, a first-generation college student is defined as someone whose parents/guardians did not attain a bachelor’s degree. Over 9,000-plus students self-report as first-generation college students, which is more than 30% of the undergraduate population at UCLA.

UCLA First To Go serves as a resource hub to assist graduate and undergraduate students who are the first in their families to attend college as they navigate the campus and provide support in building community. This includes creating environments where students can interact with first-gen faculty, learn from graduate students on how to navigate graduate school processes, and show them that they are not alone in their college journey.

First-Generation college status is an invisible identity and for many students, they are unaware that they are first-generation until later in their college career. Our goal is to reach 100 donors to raise funds to assist first-generation students in building their network of support and their Bruin community at UCLA. Gifts to our campaign will support our efforts to recognize first-gen Bruins for their achievements with first-gen graduation recognition cords.

Give a gift today to UCLA First To Go

Your gift will uplift and shine a light on the resiliency of our first-gen Bruin scholars this upcoming graduation season. Being a first-generation college student is an accomplishment that should be celebrated and First- to Go is hosting its fifth annual First-Generation Awareness Week at UCLA on February 14th - 18th. First-Generation Awareness Week gives UCLA the opportunity to bring to light the first-gen identity, celebrate the students’ success, highlight important resources that may be beneficial to their persistence here at UCLA.

For more information on UCLA First to Go or how you can get involved, please feel free to reach out to Natoya Miller at nmiller@support.ucla.edu.
