Established in 1989, Pilipinos for Community Health (PCH) at UCLA is a community service organization that provides free healthcare services, education, and supplies to socio-economically disadvantaged and underserved communities in the Greater Los Angeles area and in the Philippines. With the health field as our outlet for service, PCH aims to help communities make wise health decisions, alleviate health disparities, as well as provide our members with valuable learning experiences.
PCH organizes annual medical mission trips to chosen areas in the Philippines, where we provide medical supplies and assist in administering basic health services. PCH has been collaborating with community partners—University of the Philippines’ Ugnayan ng Pahinungod, MASIPAG, and Kiday Community Farmers Association (KCFA)—to plan the mission itinerary, contact local government units of the target sites, and recruit volunteer healthcare professionals for the mission.
This year, our target community is Barangay Pisa, in General Nakar, Quezon Province. It is a small, low-income community composed mostly of farmers and fisherfolk. The barangay (village, in Tagalog) is about forty minutes away from the center of the municipality and rural health unit, thereby experiencing limitations in access to healthcare and professional help.
As with any community service event, our medical mission needs funding! The Medical Outreach (MO) component of PCH has been actively fundraising throughout the year by selling stickers and accessories in-person and virtually, organizing a Valentine’s Day brownie fundraiser, partnering with local restaurants, and holding bingo fundraisers online. We are now also utilizing this SPARK campaign, with a goal of $3,000.
We plan to use these funds to:
PCH is committed to providing our members and service recipients the best experience possible. With the support and generosity of our alumni, family, friends, and donors like you, we are confident that we can accomplish our goals this year! Maraming salamat po. (Thank you very much.)
