Introducing UCLA’s Library for African American Studies

At UCLA’s Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, we have spent 53 years nurturing students and scholarship that makes positive impact around the globe. One of the ways that we are able to make impact is via our library and media center, which connects people with information relevant to Black communities. At The Ralph J. Bunche Library and Media Center, we collects primary source materials relevant to Black lives. Primary source materials document Black perspectives, achievements and contributions that may otherwise be lost and destroyed.

This academic year, as our library re-opens we would like to raise $10,000 to provide two students with paid internships to support The Ralph J. Bunche Library and Media Center. Would you consider making a gift today, in support of our library and students?

At our library students will be working with:

  • Archiving the Age of Mass Incarceration: Students will help us archive one of the nation’s most diverse collections of materials related to policing and incarceration. The effort will preserve an archive of data, testimonies, artifacts and police files for the next generation of research on racial and social justice.
  • The Arthur Ashe Collection: Students will help us archive hundreds of videos, interviews, photos, articles and other resources related to the life of tennis legend and UCLA alumnus Arthur Ashe. Collections related to this legendary alumni span topics such as civil rights, African-American leaders in sports, arts and the military, and historic events.
  • General Archival Processing: Additionally, students will help us archive materials that document Black people who hold other marginalized identities and who are often erased from historical memory. Black women, LGBT, queer, radical, immigrant and poverty-stricken lives that are poorly reflected in the historical record.

UCLA’s Ralph J. Bunche Library and Media Center have recently re-opened after years of closure. Together, we can grow our library and provide students with experiences that will benefit them in their life after UCLA as well. Thank you so much for helping us make our library a vibrant and impactful resource for Black scholarship.
