Help fund global health experiences for our medical students!

In 2013, the Class of ’98 Medical Student Scholarship was established to support current medical students with global aspirations. Thanks to the Class of 1998, our students have been able to travel all over the world to experience how medicine and research are practiced in a range of global settings through DGSOM’s Global Health Program (GHP).

During clinical rotations with DGSOM’s longstanding partners, students learn from local faculty about differences in health care and medical education systems, disease epidemiology, and treatment approaches. Students conducting global health research enjoy longitudinal mentorship, gain valuable skills in study design and methodology, and learn how to adapt their research to new cultural contexts while prioritizing equitable partnerships.

Help us raise $27,000 so the Class of ’98 Medical Student Scholarship can reach the endowment level of $100,000!

These clinical or research electives abroad are transformational experiences that help shape our students’ future careers, enable personal and professional growth, and instill a passion for improving health equity around the world. The average cost of a student’s time abroad ranges from $2,000 to $5,000 due to expenses such as pre-travel health care fees, roundtrip airfare, and in-country housing and food.

The Class of ’98 Medical Student Scholarship helps cover these costs for up to three students per year, and endowing this scholarship will help ensure that future qualified and passionate students can participate regardless of their financial capabilities. Your gift will provide an incredible learning opportunity and help foster the next generation of global health leaders. Thank you for your support!

Here’s what some of our GHP students have to say:

“I think it’s really important for future DGSOM students to incorporate some sort of global health experience during their time at medical school, as it helps them broaden horizons and see how health care is delivered outside of Los Angeles and the United States.” – Vikram K. ‘22

“Global health rotations have an amazing power to impact students even if global health might not be in their future as part of their practice. Things like learning how to use an interpreter effectively and how to respect and understand different cultures and traditions are all things that we can learn in a global health setting and apply when serving our patients here in the US.” – Boris P. ‘22

“During my time abroad, I noticed that many procedures were performed with minimal equipment, or equipment assembled from whatever we had existing in the emergency center. It was a true learning experience on how to be creative and effective with limited resources.” – Caroline S. ‘22
