UCLA Quidditch: Help Us Attend USQ Cup 2023

Link to 2024 spark campaign: https://spark.ucla.edu/project/40605

The UCLA Quidditch Team, now known as Quadball, is a 100% student-run, co-ed organization sponsored by UCLA Recreation/Club Sports. Composed of almost 25 student-athletes, our players juggle three weekly practices and tournaments on top of their full course loads and other various extracurricular activities. Though we are moving away from our Wizarding World roots with various name and rule changes, the original message of diverse academic and individual backgrounds remains at the heart of Quadball. Our players may share a drive for athletic competition, but we also enjoy bonding over a common love for the sport.

Hitting the ground running on our 2022-2023 school year, our team underwent a major change with many star players saying farewell as they played their last season. Nonetheless, with the guidance of returning players and passionate leadership, we have attracted new players that are making big impacts and great strides in individual gameplay development. Though we are still finding our footing and implementing new play styles onto the pitch, we’re bruin up something special with countless practices and scrimmages laying a clear path for our team’s improvement. Entering into the winter and spring months with excitement, we are ready to face Eastern and Midwest teams in the USQ Cup 2023 to re-establish our place as a Western region powerhouse.

After months of training, sweat, and a little bit of Felix Felicis, UCLA Quadball is ready for qualification for our tenth trip to compete in the US Quadball Cup, which will take place in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, in April. We are extremely excited about this Eastern endeavor and are looking forward to putting our hard work to the test against top teams in the nation this year. Unfortunately, the cost of such national-level playing comes with a not-so-college-friendly price tag.

Team expenses of attending nationals in our previous two attendances have cost just around $10,000. Due to the change in tournament location from the Western region to the East and the rising hotel fees, our cost expectation is around $13,000. With airfare, ground transportation, housing, and tournament fees, each player is estimated to cost a little more than $600 for the whole trip. Seeing how our team receives little funding from the UCLA Club Sports program, and with full-time college fees taking priority for our players, being students first and Quadball players second, we are looking for your help! Keeping our players’ best interests and being such a tight-knit community, we would be devastated if one of our roster players could not make the trip due to financial obstacles.

We wouldn’t be able to annually compete at the national level without the endless support of our donors throughout the years. Once again, we are calling on you to help alleviate the financial burden on our players’ budget and send all 21 of our roster players to proudly represent Bruin Pride on the pitch!

With this year’s fundraising campaign, we are seeking to raise $9,000 to help offset the cost of nationals for our players. With such fundraising, we’re hoping our players can sleep easy between tournament days knowing they have the financial support of our many donors. With a variety of donation levels to participate in as well as customizable donations, we are confident that your donation - no matter the amount - will help us reach our budget goal. Every dollar donated will go directly to our players, and every extra dollar raised will help sustain our program for future growth and multiple games in the program in years to come.

From all players on your favorite club sports team, we cannot come close to expressing our gratitude for the support you all have shown. It means so much to our team knowing that you have allowed us to keep our team running strong, and supporting a niche community that keeps on growing! Whether you're a long-time supporter or someone just recently hearing about our community, we appreciate you sticking with us and can’t wait to make you proud at nationals this year. We’ll catch you on the pitch, GO BRUINS!
