Building Better Together: Mobile Clinic Project at UCLA

The Mobile Clinic Project is a 22-year-old project aimed at improving the health outcomes and quality of life of individuals experiencing homelessness in the greater Los Angeles area through service, healthcare, and advocacy. Composed of undergraduate students, public health graduate students, and medical students at UCLA, the Mobile Clinic Project operates weekly streetside clinics that provide people with a safe, low-barrier, compassionate space to receive resources and care that address not only their physical health, but any other barriers to care as well. Our sister organization, Companion Care, accompanies individuals experiencing homelessness to primary care appointments to meet needs beyond clinic and build more long-term relationships with clients.

Pictured above is the entrance to our street side clinic. At the triage table, our volunteers distribute essential supplies (such as clothing, hygiene kits, blankets, and more) and direct clients to other areas of our clinic. To the back on the left is Referrals, which provides information about nearby service sites, laundry vouchers, ID waivers, and prepaid phones; Public Health, which offers subsidized bus passes; and Companion Care, which connects clients to primary care appointments. To the back on the right are our client interview stations, where medical students and undergraduate caseworkers team up to address their clients' medical and social service needs.

For the past two decades, MCP and its community partners have worked to serve unhoused and vulnerable populations in Los Angeles and break down barriers to care. Our students are committed to not only providing high quality medical care, but also a safe space that addresses systemic issues and passionately advocates for our clients’ needs. Everyone deserves access to healthcare, shelter, warm clothing, food, water, and transportation. Through MCP, we strive to provide these resources to as many individuals as we can reach.

On any given night in LA County, 69,144 people are experiencing homelessness. Homelessness is not only a public health crisis, but it is a social justice issue:

- While Black people make up 8% of LA's overall population, they make up 34% of LA's unhoused population

- Roughly 30% of the unhoused population in L.A. are people with disabilities

- LGBTQ+ youth make up roughly 36% of youth experiencing homelessness in L.A.

Furthermore, as a result of the pandemic, people experiencing homelessness continue to face evolving challenges due to COVID-19, which has made it especially difficult for unhoused individuals to access various services, especially housing and medical needs. Homelessness is a reflection of the failure of systems and is deeply rooted in systemic injustices. The Mobile Clinic Project is not only a way to provide accessible, holistic health care and resources to our unhoused neighbors, but a way to advocate with people experiencing homelessness against the systems that create this issue to begin with. Our mission is to go above and beyond to deliver the high quality and compassionate care that they deserve.

The unhoused population in Los Angeles County is one whose health outcomes are directly affected by lack of access to housing, and one that is rendered especially vulnerable due to barriers in receiving healthcare and other social services. MCP has been able to establish and maintain trust with its service recipients by meeting clients where they are at and most comfortable: in their community. Every Wednesday, rain or shine, we work to dismantle the stigma that is often associated with individuals within unhoused communities by listening to amplifying our clients’ voices and narratives, as well as reintegrating them into the continuum of care.

In the two decades in which we have operated, we have made a significant effort to build and maintain trust with our clients by meeting them where they are directly in their community. Through our collaboration with our partners throughout Los Angeles as well as generous donations from community organizations and donors, we are able to offer various resources and services to meet the unique medical and social needs of our clients:

We serve approximately 1000 clients per year. Some of our clinic expenditures include:

- $30,000 for clothing, hygiene items, and other client supplies

- $25,000 for medical supplies, equipment, medications, and acute care

- $15,000 for truck maintenance and transportation

- $12,500 for on-site and off-site facilities

- $2,500 for client transportation

Your donation will allow us to continue offering supplies for our clients!
