Join us in celebrating the Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month this May by supporting the UCLA Asian Pacific Islander Faculty Staff Association (APIFSA) fundraiser. We have put together events and a mentorship program in the past year to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds to highlight and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Asian Pacific Islander community on campus. With almost 500 faculty and staff members on our mailing list, we want to be able to sustain this explosive growth and invite community partners to sow into our effort.
This campaign will directly support APIFSA's programming for the upcoming academic year and help fund events that will create a deeper sense of community on campus and provide opportunities for networking, personal and professional growth, and cultural exchange.
We've included testimonies from members in our community about how they've been able to experience a sense of belonging through social gatherings, workshops, and fun cultural celebrations~
Your donation will help us create a safe and inclusive environment where AAPI faculty and staff can come together to celebrate our heritage, share our experiences, and support one another. No amount is too small, and every dollar counts. Let's make a meaningful impact on the UCLA campus together!
We sincerely thank you for your engagement and support!

Good things come in pairs; thank you for acknowledging us and being an ally! From the Mental Health of America, 6.1% of Americans identify as Asian American or Pacific Islander.
The first APIFSA meeting was called on October 2020 and our first official event was our Lunar New Year Celebration on February 2021. Ratified by-laws May 2021. We currently have 487 Bruins in our mailing list!
AAPI communities consist of approximately 50 distinct ethnic groups speaking over 100 languages, with connections to Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, Hawaiian, and other Asian and Pacific Islander ancestries. The month of May was chosen because it commemorates the migration of the first immigrants from Japan to the United States on May 7, 1843 and to celebrate the completion of the transcontinental railroad by over 20,0000 Asian immigrants on May 10, 1869.
Number 88 symbolizes fortune and good luck in Chinese culture, since the word 8 sounds similar to the word fā (發, which implies 發財, or wealth, in Mandarin or Cantonese). The number 8 is considered to be the luckiest number in Chinese culture, and prices in Chinese supermarkets often contain many 8s. The shape of the Chinese character for 8 (八) implies that a person will have a great, wide future as the character starts narrow and gets wider toward the bottom.
Thank you for your generous donation! Your gift will help us put on our next social, whether that's grabbing boba or checking out a comedy event!
