3 Days Left in 2018-2019 Help Our Kelp Fundraising Campaign!

December 10, 2018

Hello previous supporters of the Help Our Kelp! Team,

There are only 3 short days left in the 2018-2019 Help Our Kelp! Team’s fundraising campaign, and if you’re interested in renewing your support to fund a scientific effort to mitigate significant impacts of climate change, time is running out to donate!

We are in the final days of the campaign and making the last push to our goal of $3,000. We're 73% of the way there, but we need your help to get all the way there! As you know, your contributions fuel the efforts of UCLA students who are conducting research on marine vegetation that has the potential to alleviate the effects of ocean acidification. We are prepared to record and analyze data regarding the effects that certain marine plants have on ocean pH levels and whether they are a viable solution to ocean acidification.

If you’ve already made a donation to our campaign, thank you! You are a true partner in UCLA’s work to study and mitigate climate change.

If you wish to support the next group of great young men and women that are working hard to continue the legacy you helped establish, we appreciate donations of every size, seriously, $1 or more. To donate, please click here https://spark.ucla.edu/project/11230?fbclid=IwAR1eaO0-zGWl9W4zAUOlsQpyZKtIPkLRFOlz6yDbLhfBOVBzFzGv6da7Wn4.

You could be the one who gets us to our goal. Thank you one last time and Go Bruins!

Best regards,

Ryan, Emma, Mackenzie, Evan, Gonzalo, Eyal, and Britanie

Help Our Kelp! 2018 Campaign Launch

November 19, 2018

We are Year 3 of the UCLA Undergraduate Research Team for Ocean Acidification in the Santa Monica Bay. We are reaching out to you as a valued supporter to tell you about some exciting new developments in the project this year!

We are continuing our partnership with The Bay Foundation to help curb the destructive force of ocean acidification before it is too late. Thanks to your funding, last year we were able to use UCLA’s research Zodiac to collect data on ocean acidification in the Santa Monica Bay. We hope to further this research and continue to increase awareness of human impact in the bay and susceptibility of marine species inhabiting these waters.

We hope that we can count on your help once again! Your support and donations will help fund this year’s fieldwork on UCLA’s research Zodiac boat. We are hoping to conduct another three full days of field research as well as conduct laboratory research to process our samples. We’ve designed a website where you can learn more about our progress and donate. I encourage you to check it out! A donation of even $1 helps get us closer to our goal, and just like last year we have some exciting rewards lined up for our donors! https://spark.ucla.edu/project/11230

Ocean acidification is happening right now and our project’s success is dependent on your support and generosity! Thank you in advance and be on the lookout for further updates on the progress of our team and our final results!

First-time Access to Turning the Tides Official Website - Thank You For Supporting us!

February 01, 2018

Our team thanks you for choosing to join us on our journey to further research in acidification! We are honored to continue to receive your support and your help has played an immense part of making our work possible.

As a thank you from our team, we would like to give you access to our official website/blog before it is publicly launched!

The website can be accessed through the following link: https://turningthetidesucla.wordpress.com/

Feel free to navigate around to find out more about our team members and what our project will entail. Also make sure to follow our blog for constant updates on the progress we make on our research!

We look forward to keeping in touch!

Sincerely,

Do you want to keep hearing from us?

January 24, 2018

Our team would like to thank you again for supporting UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. As a donor to last year’s Help the Kelp campaign, you were automatically signed up to receive updates from the Kelp team on their campaign and research progress after their campaign ended.

Now that we, the 2018 team, have picked up the baton from last year’s student researchers, we’d be honored if you’d allow us to continue to update and involve you on progress we make. Updates will include information about research results as well as information about how our work on this year’s project is a continuation of the 2017 Help the Kelp campaign.

Your partnership has made this research possible so we hope you’ll choose to stay involved as the next chapter of research begins. However, we also wanted to give you the option to unsubscribe from these updates – which you can do by clicking the blue unsubscribe button towards the right and underneath of this message.

Thank you for joining UCLA students on our quest to further research on ocean acidification, and we look forward to keeping in touch.

Sincerely,

Turning the Tides Team

NEW PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENT - TURNING THE TIDES

November 15, 2017

People have been negatively altering our marine ecosystem for decades, and we need your help to turn the tides.

As a donor to last year's research, we are hopeful that you'll take action today and help UCLA students continue this important research, which was directly inspired by the results of the 2016-2017 Ocean Team's project.

Just off our shores, the underwater world has been devastated by a slow yet determined force: ocean acidification. The effect that carbon dioxide has on lowering the pH and raising the acidity of our oceans has long been understood; however, connecting acidification to local polluters and holding them accountable takes time, energy, and money.

We are a UCLA undergraduate research team partnered with The Bay Foundation to gather data on localized oceanographic parameters in targeted locations. We hope this data can be used to show the local effects polluters have on marine life in the Santa Monica Bay. We have a $4,000 target to fund data collection and equipment use, and we’re counting on you to help us get there. We appreciate your generosity, without which this project wouldn’t be possible. Thank you for any donations, forwards, shares, and even kind thoughts sent our way.

THANK YOU AGAIN + STAY TUNED

November 09, 2017

Thank you to all our generous donors for your support on our Kelp and Ocean Acidification project last year!

With your help, we were able to head out on a research boat to collect water samples from kelp forests offshore in Santa Monica Bay, and to take a trip up to UC Davis' Bodega Bay Marine lab to work with scientists and analyze the water chemistry of our samples.

Excitingly, we found evidence that suggests kelp forests may serve to change local water chemistry, meaning there is possibility kelp forests could providing a refuge for species of invertebrates, fish, and mammals as ocean waters become increasingly acidic due to climate change.

We presented the results of our research at an end-of-year event for our senior practicum program, and also had the amazing opportunity to team up with The Palos Verdes Interpretive Center for their Kids to Parks Day event, to talk about ocean health and our work with some great kids and their parents.

This research raised as many questions as it answered, and there's an enormous amount about ocean acidification and the health of Santa Monica Bay that still needs to be studied.

This year, a new Practicum team will be looking at how local sources of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere might amplify the effects of ocean acidification we're already seeing …. So stay tuned for additional information about this year's team of students working to tackle this critical problem!

Gratefully,

The 2016-2017 Team
