Ski and Snowboard Team Nationals Challenge
You may be wondering how a ski and snowboard team even exists at one of the sunniest cities in the country... the answer is passion for the sport and the thrill of adventure. Our team makes the five-hour drive up to Mammoth Mountain for competitions nearly every weekend in winter and loves every second of it. At about one-hundred members, our team is one of the larger club sports on campus. Despite the size and struggles of getting to the snow, everyone feels like a family.
On each trip to Mammoth, we compete in the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association in the Southwest division against other southern California and Arizona teams. The mountain hosts competitions in slalom, giant slalom, halfpipe, freestyle, and boarder / skier cross. As in every sport, UCLA always comes out on top. We have taken a podium position every year for the past five years with many members qualifying for the national level competition.
This year, we have around ten teammates who have qualified for nationals - an unprecedented number when only the top three athletes in each discipline move on to the national level. To keep our dues manageable for the rest of the team, funding for nationals is not in our team budget and would cost nearly $1000 if each athlete paid out-of-pocket.
This is where you can help! With a donation anywhere from a couple dollars to a couple thousand, you help us offset the costs for registration, room, and board. Please give and send us to nationals where we will be sure to make the UCLA community proud!
