The Challenge

Science and technology are drivers of innovation in the U.S. economy. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has found that computer science occupations are among the fastest-growing job categories in the United States. Unfortunately, only a narrow band of students are developing the necessary skills to step into these high-paying jobs. Minorities and girls of all ethnic backgrounds are being left behind. At UCLA Community School, we're addressing this one classroom at a time.

UCLA Community School x You

In the heart of Central Los Angeles is UCLA Community School, one of the first pilot schools in the city. We’re challenging old assumptions about teaching and removing barriers to learning. And we're making computer science education a priority. We offer Exploring Computer Science, Adobe Illustration, data analysis, and web design.

But there's more we could be doing. This is where you come in.

We have an amazing team of five innovative and driven girls called Girls in Motion who are ready to revolutionize what an app can do to change a community. They are in 9th grade and placed first place at Youth Hack Day Challenge in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, we only have one tablet and not many notebooks to fit all of their apps and all of their ideas. We need tablets and notebooks to create, test, and develop apps. More importantly, we need tablets and notebooks to show the world what girls can do in computer science education.

What Your Support Will Do

With our fundraising goal of $5,000, we aim to purchase fifteen tablets and five notebooks. This will increase our capacity not only for our current team and computer science education students but for many more students to come.
