Finished the Marathon in one piece at under 4 hours and 45 min!

March 19, 2018

Hi all-

Yesterday I completed my second full marathon at 4:43:37 which included a 5-minute bathroom break at mile 5 (ugh, the lines to the porta-potties were so long). I couldn't believe that finished 26 min faster than last year. I was about to hit the "runner's wall" at mile 20 but my friends along the sidelines and on the road pushed me forward. I actually ended up running a lot faster at the tail end of the race.

I'm not sure when my next full marathon will be (perhaps later in the year). My next run is the University of California, San Diego Triton 5K on April 15th. I'm also thinking of doing a half-marathon before I get my Master of Public Health degree in mid June!

Thank you all who came out to watch or virtually supported me. Because of you all I raised $1,090 (and counting) total for Fielding School of Public Health and broke a personal record.

1 Day until LA Marathon + OVER $1,000 RAISED!

March 16, 2018

In the past month, I've raised a total of $1,070, surpassing my initial $650 and subsequent $1,000 goal! I would not have done this without you all. Thank you for supporting fieldwork internships for future public health students.

Since January, my friend Jayhee (a 1st year Environmental Health Sciences MPH student) and I have trained at least 90 miles plus 10+ hours of gym conditioning. So far, training has been a long mental challenge, but I know that I will finish on race day. Last year, I finished at 5 hours and 9 minutes; this year, I am hoping to finish sub 5-hours.

Tomorrow, Jayhee and I are going to do a "low key", "low stress" 2-3 mile run. We'll then head off to the LA Convention Center to pick up our race bibs!

If you are interested in virtually tracking me throughout the race, go to https://track.rtrt.me/e/TS-LAMAR-2018#/tracker. If you will be spectating, my bib number is 22145!

I've attached some pictures of me in my past races. Enjoy! Thank you all, and see you on the road!

T minus 9 days, $152 to meet my $1,000 goal!

March 09, 2018

The race is in 9 days- I’m nervous but excited at the same time! Today I ran a total of 8 miles- though it wasn’t one of my better runs, I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to even train for a marathon while being a masters student at FSPH.

Things that I’m prepping in the last 9 days:

  • Still working out and training, but de-loading my long runs to save up energy for race day.
  • Thinking of an Italian or carb-loaded restaurant to eat with my friends the night before. I’m thinking Eataly, but will take any suggestions!
  • Studying for my epidemiology exam that’s next Thursday...

Lastly, I’ve decided to raise my fundraising goal from $650 to $1,000, and I’m only $152 away! Please spread the word and/or help me reach $1,000 by race day- it will definitely pump me up to finish the marathon!

Again thank you for supporting me!

19 miles completed!

February 27, 2018

Thank you so much for contributing to this cause! Yesterday, my fellow marathon training partner and friend (Jayhee, who's also fundraising for UCLA Public Health!) and I ran 19 miles together- 2, 9.5-mile loops that took us to Santa Monica Beach. The run was definitely chilly one, but here's a couple things that kept me going:

  • Belting out songs shamelessly while running through the trendy neighborhood of Brentwood;
  • Meeting awesome people at Starbucks who kindly refilled our water bottles;
  • Eating a couple energy gels to stay alive and awake; and lastly and importantly,
  • Thinking about all of my donors and friends who've supported me and given me words of encouragement throughout my childhood, high school, college, and graduate school years.

As I sit here at 11pm, eating my roommate's Cheez Its and avoiding work I need to do, I've learned that through my marathon training, there is no such thing as "can't". To be honest, I am no Boston qualifier, but I love that running pushes me mentally to do something that seemed impossible for me not so long ago. Running trains my mind to be persistent & motivated to accomplish any goal that I have in mind.

The 19 miles was my last long run before the race. I hope to do a couple more 8-10 mile runs and rest up before March 18th!

Thank you again for your support, and wish me luck!
