SPARK into JUNE!

June 01, 2018

In every ending, there is also a beginning!

Help us reach our crowdfunding goal by donating before midnight!

Give the best farewell to our soon to be VAPAE graduates by investing in the next generation of Teaching Artists. And as we approach over 100 minors that graduated from the program since the inception of VAPAE, we want to take a moment to reflect and honor past, current, and future VAPAE alumni for their amazing journey along the way.

VAPAE is honored to present: The VAPAE Ambassadors of 2018-19

SOMETHING TO SPARK ABOUT - PhotoVoice @ Venice High School

May 04, 2018

VAPAE nurtures a strong cohort of student arts educators who are eager to build upon their initial AETS teaching experience and their arts elective coursework, and commit to additional community work outside of the formal curricular options.

The PhotoVoice Program at Venice High School educates students in the art of photography using 35mm film cameras, digital cameras, and mixed media tools. The question "Who Am I?" is explored by the students as they photograph guiding concepts that communicate their thoughts on self, on school and on family, and community. The series of explorations, art-making, and photographs culminate in the development of photographic essays which are shared through unique gallery events - one at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Venice and the other in the historic Venice High School cafeteria during Parent Conference Night.

Please enjoy an in-depth video and a few of the amazing photographs showcased in this year's gallery opening; led by VAPAE-trained Teaching Artists Rachel Tu and Owen Weitzel.

  1. Student: Joshua. "Visionary Rainbow" - Bend conventions and allow imagination to breech reality.
  2. Student: Alexys. “Stories” - This here is my girlfriend, Lourdes aka Des. On what I believe was our first date to Starbucks, we sat down, she had her green tea and I had my caramel frappuccino and we talked. From that moment, I felt completely comfortable with her. It’s been about nine months since we began dating, and throughout the time I’ve spent with her I have learned so much. In the beginning when I’d admire her I’d look at her eyes, how brown they were. Beautiful pools of caramel. I saw tons of stories behind those eyes of hers. I just didn’t know any, throughout time I began to know some here and there. I’ve heard a lot of good and a lot of bad she went through, and man is she a strong girl. Even till today I’ll still hear stories. It got me thinking that there are tons of stories being told just by looking into someone's’ eyes. There’s vulnerability, sadness, anger, joy, and calmness. There’s a story behind those eyes, and if you have the patience you’ll sit down and listen whenever they’re ready to tell it. Everyone just wants someone to listen.
  3. Student: Beyonce. "Vision Beyond" - In this portrait of myself , I wanted to provide the feeling of a mystical light in my school locker and what’s beyond that light. As there is a connection with eyes and what’s beyond my locker. Visualization can give you a imagination of beyond adventures and mysteries.

MASA: Multigenerational After School Arts Program

April 19, 2018

MASA is an intergenerational afterschool arts program for local K-12 students and their parents to creatively express themselves and bond as family members and artists.

MASA programs are taught by VAPAE-trained UCLA arts students and alumni. By supporting VAPAE's after school arts programs, MASA is able to offer this weekly program free of charge to all participants, compensate its teaching artists, provide free art supplies and healthy snacks, and coordinate field trips to UCLA and other arts institutions. Building on three years of success at the UCLA Community School, VAPAE is now prepared to offer the MASA program at two additional school sites, but we need your help.

$30

Arts-Based Cleaning Supplies

Let's be honest - paints, markers, clay, and pastels can be really messy. In fact, on many days, it gets dirty! And every drip and spill matters, so as a part of every art-making lesson, all participants of VAPAE's afterschool arts programs learn the importance of keeping a clean studio space.

$50

Costumes & Design Learning

VAPAE Afterschool Arts Programs often design and print class T-shirts, either as a visual art project, or to be used as costumes for dance or theater performances, which can greatly increase a sense of wellbeing and belonging.

$100

$250

Teaching Artist Tool Kits

Teaching Artists utilize their tools to teach, demonstrate and create artwork on a weekly basis. That's a lot of wear-and-tear! Your investment will allow a Teaching Artist to maximize their materials, while helping VAPAE build their own inventory of art supplies.

$500

Arts Program Culmination Event

Help us celebrate the achievements of an afterschool arts program by sponsoring a culminating event. Be it a rehearsed performance, a film project, a small-scale gallery opening, or full exhibition, culmination provides the rare opportunity for family and friends to celebrate the students' work. Your contribution will go towards hosting this important gathering, as well as, provide personalized certificates for all students who complete a VAPAE Afterschool Arts Program, to be presented at the Culmination Event.

$1,000

Field Trips for Participants

For VAPAE, Community Engagement works multi-directionally. We support UCLA undergraduates as they go into the community to teach art, and are committed to bringing our community partners to our UCLA campus to experience the vibrant campus life and arts culture we are so proud of. Renting school buses or other transportation costs is costly, but worth it, when creating a transformative experience for local youth. Trips to our campus can be a turning point in the lives of a young person who might not otherwise have a chance to visit UCLA; it may even be the a-ha moment when a youth begins to imagine themselves one day becoming a Bruin!

$2,000

One Year of Art Supplies

In the schools and communities that VAPAE serves, our students thrive when they are well-nourished and ready to create. Your gift will help provide healthy snacks, as well as, paintbrushes, paper, glue, scissors, pencils, camera film, and other art materials, for the students participating in a VAPAE afterschool arts program over the course of an entire school year.

$5,000
