Mariachi de Uclatlán, the first college mariachi group in the world, is going to Japan! During the 2024 Spring Break, students from the advanced UCLA Music of México group will visit different universities and music schools in and around Tokyo, Japan. This trip is part of a joint effort by the Music of México ensembles and The Center for Latino Arts at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music to promote education and cultural exchange with Japanese universities. We need your help to make it possible!
Mariachi de Uclatlán is known for its passionate performances and plays a key role in spreading the rich cultural heritage of Mexican music. In Japan, there is a growing interest in Latin American music. Your donation allows our student musicians to share the sounds and emotions conveyed by Mexican music with audiences in Japan. It also allows students in the program to teach and promote the significance of mariachi firsthand beyond the United States and Mexico.
UCLA has a significant history with mariachi music, as it was the first university globally to include a mariachi group as an academic program, starting back in 1961. UCLA also conducted some of the first academic research and published the first thesis and dissertation about mariachi music. By being leaders in the study of Mexican music and influencing a network of mariachi education programs in K-12 schools and universities across the United States and around the world, your gift strengthens UCLA's global impact and its connection to the Latinx community through its teachings and performances of mariachi music.
