UCLA Men's Rugby 18-19
As our Bruin family, fan base, and reputation as a rugby powerhouse continues to grow, so do our ambitions. With over 60 men now on the roster each year, UCLA Men’s Rugby attracts the best and brightest student-athletes from around the world. This blend of domestic and international talent, who hold majors ranging from Engineering to Environmental Studies to Computer Science, has helped UCLA become one of the top ranked destinations for young ruggers.
This year we will embark on our most ambitious tournament schedule ever. We play because we love the game but remain focused on our team’s ultimate goal – to bring the National Collegiate Championship trophy home to Westwood for the first time in 43 years.
Anyone who has known a Bruin Rugby player will agree that the game produces exceptional men of character – we have 959+ alumni to prove it.
From the 4-10 hours of practice in Drake stadium each week (and even more in Acosta), to the intensity of the scrum, the game demands commitment, persistence, and a certain selfless dedication to your teammates.
Player dues, summer camps, and ticket & merchandise sales continue to be the primary sources of funding for our team. Annual dues help cover basic coaching and equipment, uniforms, SoCal travel expenses, and UCLA field reservations.
Philanthropic investments directly impact our ability to compete at the highest-levels.
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation of any size to our annual crowdfunding campaign; every single dollar that’s raised will be used this season.
Your gift can influence:
- Road Trips: The Bruins have 6 travel events scheduled already this year! Donations help us travel comfortably as a team, and are used for airfare, bus rentals, hotel stays, hot meals, and everything our team needs on the road.
- Safety & Coaching: We want our Bruins to play hard, but also want them to play safe. Annual donations medical personnel to travel with the team and also ensures the Bruins get the nutrition and strength coaching they need back at home.
- Fees & Equipment: When you’re playing a game this tough, it’s expected that your equipment is going to get beat up. Donations give the coach the flexibility to spring for new equipment, reserve our practice fields, or pay various tournament entry fees.
We are grateful to the Bruin Rugby alumni, families, and fans who support our season.
The UCLA Men's Rugby Program remains steeped in tradition and embraces the high bar of standards set by our alumni. Why is UCLA Rugby so reverent of our past? Our alumni have racked up some incredible accomplishments over the last 84 years:
At least 2 National Championships (1972 and 1975)
Countless Southern California Titles
14 alumni that have become USA Eagles
More recently, the Bruins have consistently made appearances in National Championship Tournaments in both XV’s and 7‘s Rugby. This last year, we finished 2nd overall in the 7's National Championship, and our then Freshman Bruin, Ben Broselle, was named tournament MVP. UCLA also had 4 players honored as All Americans for 2018- Yanick Mendes, Ben Broselle, Eric Naposki-Abdalah, and Patrick French.
Additionally, senior Yanick Mendes was selected as the 2018 James Shandorf Memorial Scholarship recipient. The scholarship, which covers annual dues of the recipient, is awarded to a returning player who best demonstrates the hard-nosed, “grinder” attitude that James Shandorf `11 displayed both on the pitch and in the classroom while at UCLA.
Each and every year we induct alumni into our Hall of Fame, which recognizes our program's brightest players, coaches, and volunteers for their outstanding service and contributions to UCLA Rugby. The Class of 2018 included John Gilpin '68, Skip Niebauer '76 and Tommy Smith '86.
We look forward to seeing our Bruin family on the sidelines this year, and to spending some quality time with our alumni during the 14th annual Dennis Storer Classic Alumni Weekend, currently slated for January 19th-20th, 2019.
