Sex-ed isn’t like other classes in school; it doesn’t really matter how you do on a test in class, instead it REALLY matters how you use what you learn when you’re outside of class!
That’s where the Sex Squad comes in.
Sex Squad is theater, humor, and storytelling created by college and high school students to educate their peers about intersectional sexual health topics through interactive performances based on the true stories and questions of the performers. Sex Squad address HIV/STIs, safer sex practices, consent, gender, LGBTQ+ narratives, body positivity, and the intersections of race and sexual health. As a supplement to curriculum, the Sex Squad helps schools and teachers meet the standards of the California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA) in a participatory and creative way!
Research has shown that Sex Squad has a profound impact on high school students, allowing them to laugh in the face of what they previously feared, decrease stigma around HIV, increase their sexual health knowledge, access testing services, and improve in self-advocacy and being a resource for their fellow students.
We have an ambitious goal to raise $12,500 in 40 days to fund the entire 2019 tour! Will you help us provide comprehensive sex-ed to high school youth?
We need your help to keep the Sex Squad program flourishing in high school settings across Los Angeles, to help health teachers meet California Healthy Youth Act requirements and support students in gaining critical sexual health knowledge and self-advocacy skills. One of the pivotal aspects of the program is the Sex Squad tour, where the UCLA Sex Squad takes their show on the road to perform at LAUSD high schools along with their high school counterparts. We need your funds to take the tour to LAUSD high schools and community sites, provide resources to adult allies and health teachers to implement the program in their schools, and end the tour with a flourish with the High School Sex Squad Festival, where High School Sex Squads come to UCLA to perform their own original work and plan advocacy projects in the new year.
Please donate today! Your donation means the continuation of our program and provides the support for youth-led sexuality education to continue in Los Angeles and beyond!
The Sex Squad is a part of the AMP! program for comprehensive, arts-based sexual health education.
AMP! is an Arts-based, Multiple-component, Peer-education HIV and STI prevention intervention that explores urgent sexual health topics and empowers students to navigate self-advocacy in real life situations. In partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District’s HIV/AIDS Prevention Unit, AMP! merges honest storytelling with humor, simultaneously educating and inspiring students to engage in interactive dialogue. AMP! has been successfully implemented in LAUSD high schools for the past nine years and is supported by evaluation data demonstrating intervention efficacy for behavioral change, stigma reduction, and HIV knowledge and attitudes towards safe(r) sex and PLWHA (people living with HIV/AIDS).
