Empower & Support UCLA LGBTQ Students!

The UCLA LGBT Campus Resource Center ("the Center") uplifts, supports, and empowers lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, intersex, queer, questioning, and asexual (LGBTQIA) undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty, and alumni and their allies. Through education, advocacy, programming, mental health and wellness counseling, as well as direct support, we serve more than 23,800 visitors a year to our physical space, more than 20 LGBTQIA student organizations, and more than 5,500 students a year through our programming and events.

The Center provides UCLA students with resources that enable them to thrive both academically and socially. Our critical services that support LGBTQIA students in their multiple identities include:

- Community-building activities

- Drop-in hours with LGBTQIA-affirming counselors

- Meal vouchers for students with food insecurity

- Free access to gender inclusive safer sex and menstrual supplies

- Education and training for students, staff, faculty, and University policymakers about LGBTQIA identities

On the national level, LGBTQIA students face unique and pressing challenges as compared to their straight and cisgender peers, including:

  • Lack of personal and financial support from families or origin, leading students to experience economic crisis or face food and housing insecurities.

  • Discrimination based on their multiple identities, including racism, xenophobia, and sexism, in addition to their LGBTQIA identity.

  • Limited access to LGBTQIA mentors and role models can hinder career development opportunities and professional connections.

The Center provides support to the UCLA community with very limited university funding. By giving to this Spark campaign, you will address the needs of LGBTQIA students and expand the resources and programs provided by the Center. Here's just a small sample of how donations have helped us serve students in the last academic year:

Your donations will go directly to addressing barriers our students face and providing them with opportunities to develop into effective leaders. Our $10,000 goal will support students in three ways:

  1. Emergency Funding: Providing resources to cover food, housing, transportation, school materials, and other critical needs for students in times of crisis, when they need our support the most.

  2. Student-Initiated Projects: Supporting students' professional and career development by empowering them to design and lead their own projects to serve their communities and fellow students, such as LGBTQIA Allyship Trainings.

  3. Leadership Conferences: Providing opportunities for students to attend national and regional conferences where they can build cultural competency, learn best practices, and interact with leading experts and organizations. Some conferences students have attended include:

- T*Camp: A retreat for Trans, Nonbinary, Genderqueer & Gender Questioning students

- ¡Presente!: A queer college conference for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) with a focus those who identify as part of the Latin/South/Central American diaspora.

- Out to Innovate: A career summit for LGBTQIA students, faculty, and professionals in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

- BlaqOUT: A conference for LGBTQIA folks who self identify as Black/African-American or of African descent.

Your gift of any amount can make a huge difference for LGBTQIA students at UCLA.

LGBTQIA students at UCLA are creative change agents whose critical work and thoughtful engagement on campus contribute to a more affirming, innovative, and intersectional campus community.

"Attending SoCal T*Camp as a first-year undergraduate really opened me up to what having a trans community outside of campus and online spaces could be like. The discussion space for queer and trans people of color gave me the courage to confidently move forward in my process to gain financial independence from my parents so that I could continue my transition. T*Camp honestly changed my life, and I'm so grateful to have had that opportunity to go thanks to the Center." - Kai, current undergraduate student

“As co-President of MedGLO, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA's LGBTQIA advocacy and education group, I can attest to the Center's commitment to their students and community. The Center has been a key supporter of the SoCal LGBTQIA Health Conference, a student-led conference that brings together hundreds of LGBTQIA students from medical and health professional schools across the region. This event is critical in ensuring that healthcare providers are comfortable, sensitive, and competent in their care of LGBTQIA patients.” - Hilary Bowman, M.D. Candidate, 2021, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

"Having been involved with the Center for the past three years as an intern and volunteer, I witnessed the Center’s profound dedication to supporting students of diverse and intersectional backgrounds. As a first-generation Latinx and UndocuQueer student, I have faced significant financial hurdles while obtaining my BS in Nursing. Thanks to financial support from the Center, I can overcome these challenges. Opportunities like this as well as quarterly programs, staff mentorship, and professional development have made me a better advocate for marginalized and vulnerable communities. The Center has become like a second home to me where I have my new found family. I am grateful to have had the Center as a resource as I do not think I would have been able to thrive and persevere without them.” - Paola, current undergraduate student

The ability to provide LGBTQIA students these critical and affirming programs and services are made possible through your donations. Thank you for supporting and empowering LGBTQIA students to actualize their visions of an even more inclusive campus by contributing to our Spark campaign!

Please share our Spark campaign with your friends, families, and networks. Every little bit helps us reach our $10,000 goal!
