Molly and PeteOur Story...

As a family, we are proactive and advocates of promoting kidney disease awareness for multiple reasons.  My wife Molly and I were blessed with three children, Pete Jr., Patricia, and Stephanie. Unfortunately, all three of our children inherited Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) from Molly. Two of our grandchildren also inherited ADPKD and our daughter Stephanie will soon be starting dialysis.   ADPKD is the most frequently inherited disease; it affects approximately 600,000 people in the United States and over 12,000,000 worldwide.  It is the fourth leading cause of kidney failure and causes 10 percent of all end-stage renal disease (ESRD). As a caretaker for my wife, (who has been on home peritoneal dialysis since September 1, 2016) I have experienced the devastating effects of this disease in our family.

There is certainly a great need in our society for kidney disease awareness, as well as, education and research in this area.  The mass media, quite frankly, needs to put forth more effort on promoting awareness and education on kidney disease among the general public.  I have yet to see a program or information on Kidney Disease on TV.

As a proactive family in the area of kidney disease awareness, we have established a website (kidney4grandmamolly.com) not only to seek a donor for my wife Molly, but to also promote kidney disease awareness.  Our local newspaper (COLTON COURIER Weekly May 31, 2018) also ran a story on our health issue with PKD.

We are grateful to UCLA for their coverage on our situation in their UCLA Health publication, as well as, for the UCLA CORE Kidney Team workshops we have attended at UCLA under the direction of Anjay Rastogi, MD, Ph.D.   On April 1, 2016, my wife and I attended UCLA for a consultation appointment with Dr. Rastogi.

This began our friendship journey with not just a great and talented doctor, but also an outstanding human being.  Needless to say, on that day Dr. Rastogi became, my wife’s nephrologist.

Also on that day, Dr. Rastogi became our dear and wonderful friend.   We cannot say enough great things about his loving and caring staff. The patient centered and caring atmosphere that we found in Nephrology at UCLA also permeates the atmosphere we encountered at the UCLA Cardiovascular Center where Molly and I both have Dr. William Suh as our cardiologist.

To conclude, I would like to mention that being proactive and promoting kidney disease awareness is also about supporting and giving back to the organization.  This is the reason we will be attending the UCLA KIDNEY HEALTH FAIR on May 5, 2019, at Santa Monica Beach Park

The UCLA CORE Kidney Program aims to impact the surrounding communities to achieve excellence in health by fighting kidney disease through increasing awareness of the needs of our community through Clinical Excellence, Outreach, Research and Education (CORE).

Every dollar counts: due to the incredible generosity of donors at last year's Kidney Fair, we were able to fund future educational health fairs, and free educational monthly seminars that provide the support, education and resources for those who have kidney disease or want to learn more about them.

The total return earned in excess of the amount approved annually for payout will be retained in the endowment principal to protect from the effects of inflation and to allow for growth. At the Chancellor’s discretion, when the payout is not needed for purposes of the fund, the return of payout may be added to the endowment fund principal. In the event the fund does not reach endowment minimum; or the program ceases to exist at UCLA, proceeds from the fund will be utilized in an area and manner as closely related as possible to the original intent and purposes for which the fund was established.
