Chinese American Culture Night (CACN) is an annual stage production in the prestigious Royce Hall at UCLA and is the largest event hosted by the Association of Chinese Americans (ACA). The show will take place on Saturday, May 9th, 2020 and is free for all to attend. Over 100 students put in countless hours of work, practice, and rehearsal to put on a show for over 1000 members of the community. CACN celebrates Chinese-American culture through the presentation of a student-created play and utilizes performances by ACA Hip-Hop, Chinese Cultural Dance Club, UCLA Wushu, ACA Lion Dance, and CACN Drama to educate and inspire the greater community on relevant issues that affect us all today and to promote Chinese-American cultural awareness on and beyond the UCLA campus.

This year, our story follows the life of an immigrant family living in San Francisco Chinatown during the early 1970s. In an era when the United States was largely anti-immigrant, when there was no “model minority” myth, and when gangs ruled the streets, many challenges stand in the way of a peaceful life. We follow the family members as they navigate their new life in the face of racism, financial struggles, cultural barriers, gang violence and more, exploring the hardships that Chinese Americans have faced in the past and continue to go through today. Based on real-life events, the story is more than a description of a family's life, but a demonstration of the historical social conditions and experiences that have shaped the Chinese American community into what it is today.
This year's program seeks to educate audience members about an important yet largely overlooked period in history for the Chinese American community. While there has been a rise in Asian culture awareness and discussion, many are still unaware of many significant events in Asian-American history. Despite the current political climate and the increasing role of Chinese Americans in today's activism, people within the community are not aware of the foundations that make up our unique identity in America. Through our play, we showcase a perspective that juxtaposes the interpretation of the model minority myth, presenting an overlooked period of history in which the Chinese-American community in California was divided and in conflict. We hope that the event can serve as a powerful counterexample to the historically-weak Chinese-American voice, inspiring audience members to involve themselves in more community matters.
The Chinese American Culture Night is a completely free event for all UCLA students and members of the general community to attend. In total, this year's production costs over $40,000, with the venue alone costing over $32,000. To keep the event free, we must crowdfund to cover all the costs of our production. Hundreds of students have volunteered to put in countless hours of their time and dedicate their passions into making this production happen ever year. Therefore, we will continue to make this a free event and available to all as we recognize the importance of raising awareness to our unique biculturality and we ask you, the community for your continuous support. For those interested in supporting our efforts, we would like to thank you in advance. All donations made to our production are tax-deductible!
