#BruinStrong: Community Programs Office (CPO) Food Closet
UCLA is #BruinStrong
On March 13th, UCLA’s administration, campus leaders and public health officials made the difficult choice to extend the initial transition to remote learning to limit the spread of COVID-19 through the end of spring quarter 2020. This decision was made in order to protect the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff, while maintaining UCLA’s exemplary educational standards.
Students who are able have been asked to return home to learn remotely. Students who must stay at UCLA will be cared for, protected and sheltered. Faculty and staff are rising to the occasion, learning new ways in which to serve and keep the UCLA enterprise running while protecting themselves, their families and the community. Bruins near and far are being asked to work and play differently, while still maintaining the bonds of our UCLA family.
As in any time of crisis, the UCLA community responds with optimism and generosity - asking what they can do to help. Here’s how:
What is the CPO Food Closet?
The Community Programs Office (CPO) has supported low-income students at UCLA for over 30 years. The CPO Food Closet operates as a fully-stocked pantry with fresh produce, beverages, breads, organic canned foods, hygiene products, and more for any UCLA student struggling with food insecurity. The closet stocks essentials that students need.
An Essential Resource During COVID-19
This service is more valuable than ever for students. As many face uncertainty around traveling home or staying on campus, the team at the Community Programs Office is helping students battle hunger and making sure their most basic needs can still be met. Here are some ways your donation could make an impact:
As more and more students find themselves in need of these basic items, the CPO Food Closet will be facing requests beyond what they are currently equipped to provide. We don't yet know the full extent to which the CPO Food Closet will be impacted as the effects of COVID-19 on the campus community continue to evolve. However, a gift of any size will be able to help a student impacted by this crisis.
Currently, the Food Closet is researching ways to collaborate with local grocery supplies to offer vouchers and gift cards to students in need.
