COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Project

In this unprecedented time for health care systems globally, UCLA is making remarkable strides to combat the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The strengths of UCLA Health and the David Geffen School of Medicine translational and clinical research position us to make a transformative and enduring impact on the COVID-19 pandemic.

UCLA's COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Trial

Blood from recovering COVID-19 patients (convalescent plasma) contains antibodies with promise to protect patients from the disease and enable them to recover more quickly if they develop it.

Convalescent plasma has been used to treat outbreaks of polio and measles prior to the availability of a vaccine. It has also been shown to be effective against SARS and Ebola.

UCLA’s COVID 19 Convalescent Plasma Trial will use this approach on high-risk individuals to prevent infection, to help patients gain immunity, and—as a last resort—for severe illness.

Philanthropy is critical to accelerating the pace at which our clinical research staff is able to work. Our ability to bring novel treatments to patients as quickly as possible is largely based on manpower; the generosity of our community to invest in UCLA’s research organization is urgently needed and will have a magnifying effect on the national fight against COVID -19 and future pandemics.
