Mountains for Medics: Riding for the Real Heroes

I started the year with big racing dreams, but those dreams were interrupted. With all of my races cancelled or postponed, I wanted to use my training for something meaningful. The Mountains for Medics idea came about as a way to honor the heroes that are risking their lives to treat those infected with COVID-19. These front-line workers are putting in 12 hour shifts, 3 days in a row (if not more), crushing themselves to save others. I can’t help in the hospital, but I hope to pay tribute to these heroes by crushing myself — climbing the mountains I know.

Starting on May 29th I will be riding my Factor VAM bike 112 miles and climbing 12,000 vertical ft, each day, for 3 days in a row. To take on this challenge, I called on my training partner Reggie Miller. Reg will be joining me for day 1, riding longer and more vert than he ever has. Day 2 and 3, my quaranteammate, Joe Emmerling, will tap in to help me finish the challenge.

In return, I’m asking for donations to support the UCLA Patient Care and Healthcare Provider Protection fund which helps to alleviate stress for front-line healthcare workers by providing emergency assistance with meals and basic necessities, providing PPE, and assisting in collaborations that lead to advances in testing.

Follow us on Instagram to see the suffering unfold! @king_iz and @reggiemillertnt. Each day I will post my ride on Strava and we will compile the full experience into a Youtube video afterwards.

I know these times are tight for a lot of people. Please don’t feel bad if you can’t donate! You can also help by sharing the link with friends or family who you think may be interested.

Thank you! Looking forward to testing my legs and self inducing some shortness of breath.
