Help us raise funds to support scholarships for high school seniors at Mann UCLA Community School in South Los Angeles and UCLA Community School in Pico-Union/Koreatown. The UCLA School of Education and Information Studies is committed to supporting the college success of the youngest members of our Bruin community.
In the wake of COVID-19, these already marginalized high school students have experienced major uncertainty in their daily lives. The pandemic has highlighted the many inequities that had already existed in this community. too many of these students were without access to computers or internet, and many families were without sources of income. We thank everyone who gave in April and May of 2020 to help support these families. We are now raising funds to support college scholarships for our high school seniors.
UCLA Community School Seniors
UCLA Education launched UCLA Community School in 2009 in the Pico-Union/Koreatown neighborhood of central Los Angeles. This UCLA/LAUSD partnership school is K-12 and serves children living in this low-income neighborhood, which is predominantly new immigrants from Central America. When we started in 2009, about 30% of high school seniors in this neighborhood went to college. Today, UCLA Community School is proud to have a 82% college-enrollment rate. College scholarships are key to helping these students pursue their college dreams.
Mann UCLA Community School Seniors
UCLA Education started its partnership with Horace Mann Middle School in 2015 at the invitation of LAUSD. This school is located in South Los Angeles in one of the most challenged urban neighborhoods in the nation and near the center of the 1992 riots. The students are from very low-income families and the school estimates that about 60% of the students live with someone other than a parent, either as part of the foster care system or with a relative. The school became UCLA's newest K-12 partnership school with LAUSD and was renamed as Mann UCLA Community School in 2017. We began to expand the school into high school, adding a grade each year, and this is the first year that we have a senior class. We look forward to providing scholarship opportunities to these young people.
