Overview:
Formed in 2007, UCLA Club Swimming has given students the opportunity to swim competitively in college without the rigors of being a Division-1 athlete. We welcome students of all ability and we have about 160 swimmers registered with the club this year. This year, after almost 2 years of online learning, Zoom socials, and no in-person practices as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are seeing some of the greatest enthusiasm and motivation from our swimmers as we return to campus!
The club, originally called UCLA Swim Club, focused on allowing students to find a community based on their love for swimming. Swim meets and competition were the secondary focus. Over the past 6 years, the club has shifted to focus more on the competitive side of swimming, rebranding itself as UCLA Club Swimming and regularly attending competitions at other colleges and universities along the West Coast.
As part of this shift towards competition, a big aspiration for many of our swimmers is to compete in the Collegiate Club Swimming & Diving National Championships, which are being hosted by Georgia Tech Swim Club in Atlanta, Georgia this year. After the previous 2 years' Nationals being cancelled due to the pandemic, it is one of the most anticipated meets of the season - however, the travel and lodging costs are a huge financial burden on many of our swimmers.
What We Are Asking For:
Nationals Cost Breakdown
The cost per swimmer in 2019 was $662, and with your support and donations we were able to send 18 athletes to compete. However, there were still many qualifying swimmers who were unable to attend as they and their families were already paying for tuition, housing, and books. Why would they spend that much money when they could put it towards those more important items?
This year, the estimated cost per swimmer is $527, which is still too expensive for many of our swimmers. We need YOU to help us reach our goal of $5,500. We would put 75% of these donations towards subsidizing the cost of attending Nationals for each swimmer. You could help reduce the cost per swimmer by more than $170. Only with your help can we succeed!
Cost Per Swimmer
Since not all of our swimmers will be attending Nationals, this fundraiser will still benefit the entire team.
The remaining 25% of the money raised will go towards paying for staff and officials to help run our home meets. UCLA Club Swimming is known for holding well-organized, highly attended meets throughout the College Club Swimming community, but our meets are entirely student-run. With such a large membership turnout this year - and an anticipated increase in the coming years - hiring officials to help with timing, meet monitoring, and overall making sure the meet runs smoothly is the next step in ensuring a seamless and fun experience for our swimmers and other clubs. Swim met officials charge around $250 per day; we host two home meets each year, requiring at least two officials to run smoothly.
