Founded in 1968, UCLA Black Alumni Association is the oldest diversity alumni association at UCLA. The purpose of the UCLA Black Alumni Association (UBAA) is to empower UCLA African American Alumni, Students, Staff, Faculty and the community at large to form powerful associations through advocacy and mobilization that create greater educational opportunities and resources for the African American community collectively.
Providing scholarships, advocacy, support and networking opportunities have been just a few of the ways UBAA has and continues to support the University and its mission of diversity.
Since 2007 UBAA has been raising scholarship funds for incoming African American freshman and transfer students via the UBAA Winston C. Doby Legacy Scholarship. Named for past Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Dr. Winston C. Doby, this scholarship campaign has resulted in an increase in the admit numbers of African-American/Black students coming to UCLA since the devastating fall resulting from impact of Proposition 209. It is the commitment of UBAA to achieve a $20M endowment that will fund $1M annually in scholarships to entering African-American/Black freshmen, transfer and continuing students.
With the generous support of its donors and enthusiastic participation of its membership around the country and world, UBAA has provided over $5.5M in scholarships to over 900 students, raising almost $7.0M to date.
Your support will help to make more stories like UBAA Winston Doby Legacy Scholarship recipient, Bryce Bentley a reality. Bryce completed his undergraduate degree in 2019 in Physiological Science/Pre-Med and is now pursuing a career in medicine as a L.A. Care Health " Elevating the Safety Net 2020 Scholarship” recipient at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
