WHO ARE WE?
UCLA Project RISHI (Rural India Social and Health Improvement) is a nonprofit organization that takes a community-based approach to sustainably developing and empowering the residents of a rural Indian village named Vadamanapakkam in Tamil Nadu. In partnership with local community members and social enterprises, we identify issues central to our target communities and provide the resources necessary to implement solutions through extensive field research and on-campus initiatives. The UCLA chapter works on improving the quality of life in our village by creating initiatives in education, women's empowerment, environmental sustainability, and clinic & pharmacy.
ABOUT THE PROBLEM:
Sustainable development and building trust are two of the central tenets of RISHI. However, due to COVID, we have been unable to travel to India since 2019 to implement our past initiatives and follow up on the status of projects that have already been implemented. Going to India will allow our club to gauge how we can support villagers in the future through both short-term and long-term projects. We would be able to execute the projects we have worked on such as the new nutrition book for children, a new medical camp for women, and maintenance of the education institutions.
WHY THIS MATTERS:
It is vital that Project RISHI maintains strong relationships with the village because we value an equal-stakes partnership. Our goal is to develop trust with the villagers so they feel confident and comfortable with receiving aid from RISHI, an organization that is external to their village. Our projects aim to improve nutrition, support the school children, and increase medical accessibility which are projects that the village has specified as areas of improvement. We hope to establish new connections with various sectors of the village such as the women’s self-help groups and the school administrators.
