Empower Vulnerable and Underserved Kids with A Moment of Magic at UCLA

A Moment of Magic (AMoM) is a nonprofit with a mission to improve the quality of life of vulnerable and medically underserved children and inspire them to be brave, strong, and fearless through fun and engaging social wellness activities. Founded in the Spring of 2022, we as the UCLA chapter aim to engage college students to proffer creative services to children in the Los Angeles area. Along with 1,100 other student volunteers and around 30 collegiate chapters across the country, volunteers at UCLA will visit hospitals and social service institutions to create magical moments.

In our in-person magic sessions, we carry out activities of arts and crafts, music performance, movement, and guided reading as means of social and emotional development, as well as allocating dedicated playtime that caters to the specific needs of each child. While we are away from the volunteer sites, we are raising awareness about youth mental health with on-campus fundraisers and curating personalized care packages for children residing in social service institutions with whom we are partnering.

Both character and regular volunteers undergo extensive training to interact with children with special needs. After all, we want to create a safe and supportive space for the children we serve, all the while ensuring enjoyable programming activities to allow children relief from their independent battles against medical illnesses or other hardships in life.

Every 60 seconds, a child requires urgent medical care. 1 out of 5 children experiences a mental health condition in a given year. For LA county specifically, there are 16,906 children in out-of-home placements as of April 2022. Deprived of a normal childhood, medically underserved children find significant challenges in maintaining their psychological health. In fact, children with chronic medical conditions are 7 times more likely to grapple with mental health issues that are continually unresolved.

This is why we do what we do.

We recognize that the most prominent and powerful coping mechanism in childhood is play. Creating moments of fun, empowering experiences for children decisively contributes to emotional and mental well-being, self-confidence, and self-esteem. Even though we may lack the ability to resolve and fully comprehend the agony and challenges children and their families undergo, we want to, for a moment, create a space for emotional release, healing, artistic expression, and self-discovery for all deserving children. By filling the otherwise quiet hospital room with laughter, we wish they understand that they are not alone on this journey.

As a new student organization on campus, we often find ourselves needing additional financial support to cover a wide variety of expenses for the successful launching of our volunteer service. Apart from paying national dues, we need to purchase quality art materials and other supplies in preparation for future volunteer sessions. More importantly, as our student volunteers prepare for the upcoming character audition cycle, we hope to support each of them by helping them pay off the high costume cost, which could be challenging to fundraise on one’s own. While AMoM at UCLA hosts regular fundraisers throughout the school year, Spark donations will constitute the greatest source of support for us to afford those non-negotiable costs. In order to cover the expenses for the school year, we hope to fundraise $2,500 through this campaign. The breakdown is as follows:

As AMoM at UCLA provides creative programming opportunities to vulnerable children FREE OF CHARGE, your support will aid us immensely in covering essential expenses. With your contribution, we will not only be able to offer quality supplies for the children we serve but also enable compassionate and willing college students to be trained as character volunteers, who would play a key part in the creation of memorable moments. Any donation size will mean the world to us–by donating to our Spark campaign, you are enabling us provide create art methodology for children to freely express, play, and heal. Through this project, we can impact hundreds of children in Los Angeles by ideating memorable services, training college student volunteers, and designing activities conducive to the mental health of underprivileged children. We thank you for supporting AMoM at UCLA and its initiative! Your generosity is why our magic lives!
