About us
The Bruin Surgical Undergraduate Society (BSUS) is a club for pre-med and pre-health students interested in gaining exposure to the field of surgery. Our goal is to provide members with a sense of community and access to resources, such as conferences, workshops, and networking events with surgeons and healthcare professionals. BSUS ensures that all of its opportunities have formal commitments to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) and welcomes all individuals, including those from historically underrepresented minority groups, differently-abled individuals, and disadvantaged backgrounds.
What we do
The main objective of our club is to provide surgery-related resources to UCLA's undergraduate community. The majority of our main events are bringing guest surgeons and residents to come and speak about their work experience and their journey going into the medical field. And since the club was founded in October 2022, we have put on over 10 unique events, with over 40 different guest surgeons and resident speakers. Our largest event, the Spring Surgeon Mixer held in April 2022, had over 20 surgeons and residents and over 50 general members were able to chat with the guests.
Help us put on events!
Last year, the majority of BSUS events were funded at the expense of our board members who are all undergraduate students that have to deal with all the costs of being college students. The main expenses with running events include venue reservations, furniture rentals, and catering. Donations will go toward the aforementioned costs for all BSUS events for the 2023 calendar year. This will not only free up the financial burden on our board but also provide our general members and guest speakers with a more robust experience. Additionally, we are planning on a surgeon mixer in the winter, and to avoid bad weather conditions and limited sunlight, we need to host this event indoors.
