We are Expressive Movement Initiative (EMI), a UCLA- undergraduate organization that provides free dance classes to kids with developmental disabilities. This Spring, we will be offering one in-person class in addition to our two growing online classes. Join us in making our dream of piloting an in-person class this spring a reality by donating today!
Our Dance Classes
What makes EMI unique is that we provide a safe and encouraging space for kids with disabilities to express themselves artistically. Since 2020, all of our classes have been held over Zoom, allowing us to expand our outreach. We have always wanted to move beyond the screen and provide our students with a more tactile, engaging experience.
Our program alternates between group and buddy classes. Our students are paired one-on-one with an undergraduate volunteer/”buddy”. In group classes, all of our dancers and volunteers are in one zoom room, learning routines and exercises from our artistic directors. Then in the following buddy class, our students reinforce those skills with their buddy and engage in fun games and activities. We are extremely proud of the meaningful, trusting friendships that our club fosters between our students and buddies.

Since our founding in 2019, we have served over 100 dancers and reached 9 states. We are proud to say that many of our families are returners and have remained in our program for many sessions. Please help us support our dancers and promote this incredible, unique opportunity to other children with disabilities! Besides our in-class operations, your donations will go towards our dance supplies (dance scarves, rubber floor dots, and shaker eggs), help us bring in experts in dance therapy and anti-ableism to enhance our teaching and allow us to create a more inclusive and accepting community for all individuals with disabilities at UCLA.
