Rocket Project at UCLA

We are Rocket Project at UCLA, a club where students with no prior experience can build and launch rockets. Our students are passionate about space flight, and we believe that our generation is capable of traveling farther than ever before.

We provide valuable rocket engineering training through RISE and Prometheus, and returning members get to work on advanced rocketry systems used in the aerospace industry through Ares and R&D. Students also uplift their local and national communities through outreach.

With your support, we will be able to continue to offer high quality opportunities that prepare students for their future careers and academic endeavors. For every donation up to our goal of $10,000, the UCLA School of Engineering Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering will match your amount in full, meaning your donation will go twice as far!

If we reach our goal (+ matched amount) the donations will be divided among our projects as follows:

Ares

Project Ares is Rocket Project’s flagship rocket team, building a bipropellant liquid rocket every year with the goal of reaching an apogee of 30,000+ feet. Project Ares currently holds the national apogee record for collegiate liquid rocket teams, when it reached 19,000 feet just two years ago. We aim to surpass that record this March, launching our new liquid rocket to 30,000 feet.

Prometheus

Project Prometheus is the Rocket Project at UCLA's new-member hybrid rocket team in which members contribute to the full-scale design, integration, and manufacturing of a hybrid rocket within 5-6 months. Through this hands-on experience, members study, research, and analyze intricate system components and materials whilst gaining valuable engineering skills and rocketry knowledge. The culmination of their efforts is an entirely student-made hybrid-powered rocket that reaches an apogee of 10,000+ feet.

RISE: Rocketry Introduction for Student Education

ENGR 96R: Introduction to Engineering Design: Rockets is a UCLA class taught by undergraduates, where we provide free training for participants, giving all students the opportunity to explore rocketry, the aerospace industry, and realize their potential and build confidence as future engineers. Students develop teamwork, communication, and presentation skills, increasingly important in the world of engineering. Students design and build powerful rockets from scratch in small groups, launching to heights of thousands of feet in the air at the end of the quarter.

Outreach

Rocket Project's Outreach program promotes STEM and inspire young students to become “powerful problem-solvers,” Rocket Project at UCLA undergraduate members work with local schools to host hands-on presentations focused on demonstrating the power of science. Across LA county, we have visited multiple elementary schools. We have been able to hold events all over the country with the introduction of virtual outreach events as well.

Rocket Project at UCLA’s goal in outreach is to allow equal learning opportunities between students in underserved areas. We want to provide fun and exciting learning resources accessible to all students with hands-on STEM learning.

R&D

Aurora is Rocket Project’s R&D team—because you can never have enough rocketry knowledge! We aim to make advanced, industry standard rocket technologies as accessible as possible, giving students with 1+ years in the club the chance to explore their passions and gain valuable technical experience to further their careers.

Before each quarter, students have the opportunity to submit project ideas in subjects they are passionate about, and then all members vote for their favorites—the top projects are then chosen, allowing all members through the year to get experience with projects they have interest in.
