Our crowdfunding campaign has ended, but you can still support the Jay Lab by clicking here.
Thank you so much to all of you, our donors, for your generous contributions. Because of your gifts, we were able to reach our goal last night with one day to spare!!!
We have raised a total of $5,071!!!! Thank you for sharing our campaign to your friends and family. It made a huge difference! We are so excited to continue this research and are so grateful for all of your continued support of the Surfer Resistance Project.
I also owe a big thank you to the phenomenal undergraduate researchers Shannon Cavanaugh, Mathew Gutierrez, Pauline Nguyen, Emily Glaser, Ellie Graessle, and Lauren Beckett. Shannon, Mathew, Emily, Ellie and Lauren have been helping me collect surfer's swabs at 6 am on the beach, and Pauline has been filtering water samples and performing multiple DNA extractions a week. They all have busy schedules, yet they dedicate their time to work on the Surfer Resistance Project. They have been instrumental to this research and the Jay Lab is lucky to have them.
Lastly, thank you so much for all my awesome surfers who have volunteered for nose swabs. We truly could not do this project without you! I am stoked to continue this project together.

Hi friends,
Have you ever been curious about how we get nasal swab samples? Here is a video of Shannon Cavanaugh and Megyn Rugh with a surfer in Venice Beach last week.
We owe a huge thank you to all the surfers who volunteered to get their noses swabbed.
Thanks to you, our donors, we are now at 68% of our $5,000 goal with 8 days left to raise $1,594. Thank you for supporting us!
Thank you for also sharing our campaign far and wide - it's making a difference! If you haven't already please consider telling your friends, family, and surfers everywhere about the Surfer Resistance Project. There's only a few more days left in our campaign!
Although the waves weren’t the best, we had a great group of surfers turn out for our El Porto sampling events this week! We owe a huge thank you to all the surfers who volunteered to get their noses swabbed.
Thanks to you, our donors, we are now at 66% of our $5,000 goal with 14 days left to raise $1,629. Thank you for supporting us!
We are so excited to continue moving forward with the Surfer Resistance Project. Please consider sharing our campaign with your friends, families, and surfers everywhere. All gifts add up and make an impact on our research!
Thanks!
Hi Donors,
I have spent the last few days making agar plates in preparation for an intense week of sampling beginning October 1!
If you are in the area, you can stop by and see us in action between 6:30-8:30 am at El Porto on Oct. 1 and 3, and Venice Beach on Oct. 2 and 4. We'd love to meet you!
I wanted to thank you all again for your contribution to the Surfer Research Project. You have already helped us fundraise so much! We would love if you would consider sharing our campaign to your network and social media, so we could continue to reach our goal and potentially reach ever more surfers.
Right now we are at 40%, and have 20 days left in our campaign. :)
Cheers,
Megyn
Hi donors,
After two days we have already reached 35% of our goal. This is absolutely incredible! We cannot thank you enough for the early support and your generous contributions. There are so many passionate students, including myself, that are so excited to begin this project. You are making it possible and we are extremely grateful.
I also wanted to share a fun article that came out last week: http://www.laist.com/2018/09/14/la_surfers_are_covered_in_germs_--_and_these_scientists_want_to_know_why.php
Thank you,

Additional nasal swab sample for one surfer that will be used to quantify ARGs (antibiotic resistance genes).
One-time nasal swabbing of a surfer to see if they are colonized by MRSA.
This gift will allow us to add another surfer to the study. We will screen them one-time for MRSA and ARGs.
This would allow us to screen the same surfer twice for MRSA and ARGs.
This donation will allow us to screen the same surfer for MRSA and ARGs three times over the 2018-2019 winter surf season.
We would also like to screen all of our surfers for VRE. To do so, we need to purchase special agar, petri- dishes, and antibiotic supplements.
With this generous donation, we could screen for one more antibiotic resistance gene in both nasal and marine water samples.
With your incredible leadership contribution, we will be able to expand our research sites and add another Southern California beach to our study locations. Thank you!
