Awarding Talented Scholars

Below are the three current D.C. Area Alumni Scholarship winners, representing a small sampling of the talented students from this area who are interested in pursuing their education at UCLA. Check out what an impact these students are already having on the UCLA community and the wider world.

Allison – UCLA Class of 2017

Hails from New Market, VA

• Psychobiology major, pre-medical, an aspiring doctor of internal medicine
• Member of science and health organizations:
  • Psi Chi, the Neuroscience Undergraduate Society
  • COPE Health Scholar: shadows health care professionals
  • Volunteers on nights and weekends at the California Hospital Medical Center in downtown LA
• Student circulation and stacks supervisor at the UCLA Law Library

Taesha – UCLA Class of 2018

Attended high school in Virginia Beach after living in Rappahannock County for 13 years

• International Development Studies major (but already considering picking up a double major with Sociology or minoring in Food Studies)
• Will be studying abroad with UCEAP next Fall 
• Director of Programming for Alpha Phi sorority
• Membership intern for USNC LA Chapter - UN Women, a gender equality rights nonprofit organization 
• Greek Week Executive Board member to raise money and donations for UniCamp
• Involved with the UCLA Outdoor Adventure Club that takes weekend camping and exploration trips, including Big Sur, Joshua Tree and Sequoia National Park

Stephen – UCLA Class of 2019 (Centennial Class!!!)

From Columbia, MD

• Electrical Engineering major
• Member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon
• Interested in Defense Contracting
• Interning this summer at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory

Scholarships can be truly transformative for students, especially those who rely on philanthropic support to help make the opportunity to attend UCLA a reality. Two-time Super Bowl champion James Washington provided Washington DC Scholarship donors with his perspective on being a scholarship recipient and how life-changing a UCLA education can be. James shared with the group how his foundational experiences at UCLA, both on and off the field, helped him to navigate the NFL and continue to help him in his professional career at UCLA.
