These are a just few of the startling conclusions researchers at the UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies have learned as they launch the Hollywood Diversity Report, a landmark study on race and diversity in entertainment.
HOW WE CAN MOVE FORWARD
Led by Dr. Darnell Hunt, director of the Ralph J. Bunche Center, and Dr. Ana-Christina Ramon, assistant director, the research team aims to change the narrative in Hollywood by:
- Generating a comprehensive research analysis of the inclusion of diverse groups in film and television, including starring roles, writing, directing, producing, and talent representation.
- Identifying and disseminating best practices for increasing the pipeline of underrepresented groups into the Hollywood entertainment industry.
- Advancing existing entertainment industry efforts to better serve a diversifying America.
And the Hollywood Diversity Report is already having an impact!
Since the release of the report's first phase last February, it has generated national and international media attention, and has led to conversations with major networks and studios about how to improve diversity both in front of and behind the camera.
WE NEED YOU
Your support will enable the Ralph J. Bunche Center to produce this much-needed, in-depth analysis of diversity in Hollywood on an annual basis, making it the definitive account of diversity statistics for the industry.
The report will provide studios and networks with useful, annually updated information that enables them to match their content to changing American demographics. It will also provide scholars and researchers with a clear picture of who is employed in the industry.
Your support also will have an immediate impact.
As a result of our initial findings, industry executives are eager to learn the results of the report's next phase and how they can address these diversity issues in current and future productions.
