Hugs in a Blanket is a student organization whose mission is to provide love and care to community members who are in need by making and donating fleece blankets. The organization was first established at Taft Charter High School by Camille Ng in 2016 and was then brought to UCLA in the fall of 2018. Since 2018, our organization has donated over 1100 blankets to community groups including Mayor Garcetti's Crisis Response Team and UCLA Ties for Families.
Due to the unprecedented onset of COVID-19 during this past year, our organization can no longer meet in-person to make blankets. In addition, many institutions are now unable to accept our blanket donations because of hygiene risks. Although Camille Ng continues to make fleece blankets individually at home, Hugs in a Blanket has started a new project in order to continue spreading love and care to our community. For this holiday season, Hugs in a Blanket will be transitioning from making handmade blankets to making handwritten cards of appreciation for frontline workers! With the inclusion of a $5 gift card, these personalized cards will be sending our love and gratitude towards these amazing individuals who sacrifice their safety for us everyday. In addition, every donor will have the opportunity to submit personal words of thanks that we will include in our cards!
From grocery store employees to healthcare workers, all these amazing individuals have been selflessly dedicating themselves to help us live our normal lives during the pandemic. However, many of these workers go unnoticed or taken for granted. For this project, we want to make sure our frontline workers know how much they are loved and appreciated during this time. Because our organization is largely donor-supported, we really need your help! A donation of any size will help us thank these wonderful people who have gone beyond the line of duty to keep us healthy and safe.
In the past two years at UCLA, Hugs in a Blanket has made and donated a total of 1,146 fleece blankets to community organizations. During our Spark Campaign last year, supporters helped us raise $5,525 which allowed us to gift 250 of our handmade blankets to the Foster Children's Resource Center, an organization that provides foster children with new, everyday items. Although we could not personally hand out the blankets to the children as a group, we were so glad to hear that the children absolutely loved our blankets and enjoyed picking out their favorite one among the variety of prints we offered. Thank you again to everyone who helped us give these foster children handmade blankets for the holiday season!
We were also able to fund a donation of 40 blankets to the babies and their families in the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Unit. Camille Ng, president of Hugs in a Blanket, personally handed out these blankets to the babies' families and was super thankful that these blankets were able to provide comfort to them during uncertain times. This donation was also featured on CBS2/KCAL9's news segment, People Making a Difference. You can watch the segment here!
