Contribute to excellence and the future of the free press! Support the Daily Bruin Scholarship for student-staffers pursuing careers in journalism and media!
For more than a century, The UCLA Daily Bruin, the third-largest newspaper in Los Angeles by circulation, has served as the paper of record of Westwood, and the essential training ground for UCLA students interested in the practice of journalism and careers in the media at large. Generation after generation, The Bruin has produced award-winning journalists and media professionals of distinction.
When asked about our days at UCLA, the Daily Bruin alumni all say, “We majored in The Bruin.” But balancing rigorous academics at UCLA and the near-full time commitment to maintain the award-winning standards of The Daily Bruin is indeed difficult. Stipends have been falling as newspapers nation-wide struggle to maintain revenue flow in the digital era — and The Daily Bruin is no exception to this unfortunate trend. With ever-rising tuition and cost of living in Westwood, it is more difficult than ever for The Bruin staffers to persist and pursue careers in the press and media, which is essential to not just the UCLA community, but the world.
In 2018, the Daily Bruin Alumni Network established The Daily Bruin Scholarship, which currently awards five (5) merit scholarships of $2,000 each per academic year to Daily Bruin staff members who have shown dedication to The Bruin and wish to pursue careers in journalism, media and related fields upon graduation.
The support of the DB Scholarship enables these promising student-staffers to rise through the ranks from cub reporters to editors, to practice the craft elbow-to-elbow with professionals from the LA Times and the OC Register, and to prepare for the competitive journalism and media job market upon graduation.
Working at The Daily Bruin creates bonds that last a lifetime and gives the student-journalists the training that enables them to succeed in the world. In the daily trials and tribulations of putting out the newspaper, in print or online, the student-staffers make life-long friends and gain valuable skills that have produced stellar journalists, as well as leaders in law, business, government, entertainment, education, the arts, technology, and philanthropy.
Contribute today and support the promising student-staffers of The Daily Bruin! The DBAN is very proud to take part in 2021 UCLA Blue & Gold Challenge, providing the support that is a tribute to the Bruin resilience, creativity and innovation that has made UCLA the No. 1 public university in the nation for the fifth year in a row. The Daily Bruin Scholarship Fund is an official account of the UCLA Fund, and your tax-exempt contributions counts toward Chancellor’s Society Status as well as the Centennial Campaign. We also encourage and accept employer-matched contributions.
