WHO WE ARE
UCLA Club Soccer is a group of 25 talented and competitive women, united by their love of the beautiful game. This year, we selected 8 new members from a tryout pool of nearly 100; these players were an exciting addition to an already formidable team. This team is now the 2022 Open Division National Champions! On top of athletic success, each player is a brilliant and committed student, working to balance her coursework with our demanding soccer schedule.
Beyond that, UCLA Club Soccer is family. We support each other, we push each other to do our best; we cook for each other and have dance parties and giggle together. We love soccer, but we love each other even more.
As a student-run club only partially funded by UCLA, we rely on individual dues and community donations for funding. Thanks to our strong network of friends, family, and alumni, we are able to raise thousands of dollars each year in order to finance everything from equipment to tournament fees to plane tickets. Last year, we were able to raise over $11,000, surpassing our initial goal by over $3,000.
This year, we traveled up and down the state of California, playing in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and San Diego. Our success in these games earned us a chance to play at Nationals in Round Rock, Texas, where we went undefeated and ultimately won the championship. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of our donors; this year, we’re hoping to raise $10,000, most of which covers travel expenses.
PROGRAM HISTORY
UCLA Women‘s Club Soccer strives for success on and off the soccer field. While we practice 3 times a week and play up to 6 games on weekends, players also devote time to other clubs and activities—all this on top of the demanding coursework required of students at UCLA! Each player is inspired by the drive, talent, and tenacity of her teammates to set high goals; the support we receive from each other allows us to reach them. Off the field, we have become close friends, spending time together at social events and helping each other in our classes.
This program has a long history of excellence, and each season we are able to build on past success. In 2019, our team made it to the semi-finals of the closed division of the NIRSA national competition. In 2021, we placed first in our league, as well as within the top 16 teams in the country.
Despite a rocky start to the 2022 season, our grit and hard work helped us connect passes, score goals, and shut down the opposing offense in order to win it all.
After allowing just 2 goals in our first five games, and scoring 11, we defeated University of Kansas 1-0 in the Open Division Championship. This was truly a team win, with goals from 8 different players throughout the weekend, and visible team chemistry that made our games a joy to play and watch.
On top of our success as a team, Emily Berg, McIver Levy, and Kaella Chin were selected to the All-Tournament roster, and Alison Shea received tournament MVP.
After such an epic end to our fall season, we can’t wait to do it all again in the spring!
None of this would be possible without the generous gifts we receive from donors. Not only does it help fund our competitions and travel fees, but it also helps alleviate the financial stress for players who already pay for tuition, housing, textbooks, and food. Whatever amount we do not raise, we pay for out of pocket, which is why every amount makes a difference! With your help, players can continue to play the game they love without the financial stress, and, as an added benefit to donors, your donations are tax-deductible!
Thank you for taking the time to read about our team! We cannot wait for winter & spring league and are so excited to see where the year takes us. We could not do it without you; go Bruins!
