On January 15th, 2024, the Vietnamese Student Union at UCLA will present its 44th Annual Vietnamese Culture Night (VCN). VCN is an annual student production that gathers over 1,700 community members in UCLA’s esteemed Royce Hall for a show that highlights the experiences of Vietnamese Americans, often through the lens of a particular social issue affecting the community today. Through the hard efforts of our 180+ student cast, performances by Vietnamese Traditional and Moditional Dance, Awechords Acapella, VSU Modern, and a student-written play, our production is made to tell the stories of our community and our culture. Our culture night hopes to leave a lasting impression on every member of the audience and invoke discussion on our realities and legacies as Vietnamese-Americans.
This year, our production will focus on bridging the gap between generations, using the Vietnamese legend of Truyền Thuyết Con Rồng Cháu Tiên (Children of the Dragon and the Fairy) to push forward the themes of family, sacrifice, and identity. Filled with both deeply heart-wrenching and heart-warming moments that will connect with each and every audience member, VCN 44 will tell the story of not just a daughter, but also of her mother, and how the two individuals have learned to grow, love, and sacrifice given the circumstances that they face.
This year’s production aims to be our largest yet, with our budget amounting to almost $55,000! Below is a budget breakdown of this year’s production expenses. By supporting, you directly help to get us one step closer to the Royce Hall stage!
Every donation will be used for one of these categories, focusing primarily on our production supplies and facilities costs!
If you represent a company, business, or organization and are interested in sponsoring our production, we also have an extensive set of tax-deductible sponsorship opportunities (with benefits) to offer! Please reach out to our Fiscal Head, Harrison Cassar, at fiscal.vcn.ucla@gmail.com indicating your interest!
Our production is empowered by all of its student-run component teams:
Through a beautiful set design and student-acted drama production, our Drama, Backstage, and Sound components aim to bring this year’s story to life on the Royce Hall stage.
Our Performance components bring color, motion, and music to our story, featuring powerful performances from Vietnamese Traditional Dance, Moditional, Awechords Acapella, and VSU Modern, as well as surprise guest performances that will further explore our Vietnamese culture.
Working to make everything happen, our Fiscal component manages our production’s finances, plans and runs fundraisers, and develops amazing partnerships with company sponsors, UCLA, and generous members of our wide-reaching community, including people like you!
Wrapping it all together, Our Publicity component helps showcase the beauty in every aspect of our production to you and our community, creating memories that will be treasured for the years to come.
On behalf of the Vietnamese Student Union at UCLA and everyone here on the 44th Annual Vietnamese Culture Night cast, thank you for your support! With your generosity, our production is able to continue creating meaningful experiences that provide a lasting impact on the community and beyond.
A special thanks to Tiana Hoang, Dominic Pham, and Long Truong for the beautiful source images of our last year's VCN 43 production used throughout this project page.
