My name is Elsa and I’m a 2nd year M.S. student in the Community Health Sciences department at UCLA’s Fielding School of Public Health.
This will be my first time ever running a marathon and I’m super excited! A few years ago, I’m not sure running a marathon is something I would have thought that I would be able to do. And even as a 1st year student, I was skeptical that I could accomplish something so monumental. But being provided such a great opportunity to run in the L.A. Marathon as part of a group of UCLA folks, and the support and encouragement of all the individuals at Fielding has been really phenomenal.
As a student, I’ve spent much of my time and energy participating in the Mobile Clinic Project at UCLA, which is a student-run, collaborative organization that provides medical care and serves to reconnect un-housed individuals in the Los Angeles Community. And not unlike a marathon, working to address homelessness and other health disparities can also feel like a monumental endeavor at times. But working together with so many driven and community-minded individuals at Fielding and UCLA allows us to continue our outreach efforts and hopefully make an impact in our community.
Through my deep involvement with the Mobile Clinic Project, I have seen first-hand how important it is to translate classroom learning into real world experience. I am running with the FSPH team to raise money for fellowships for summer fieldwork so that my classmates will have the opportunity to participate in similarly meaningful fieldwork experiences this summer. Your gift will help enable students to do great work in organizations and communities that can benefit from their knowledge of public health, but may not be able to provide compensation. With your help and support, Fielding students can afford to spend the summer making a difference in communities in Los Angeles and around the world.
