For over a year, immigrant communities on our campus and across the nation have struggled with uncertainty as ongoing debate in Washington threatens and leaves unresolved the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. At the same time, our international students and colleagues have been subjected to travel bans that predominantly target Muslims. I’ve learned and have been inspired by the stories of undocumented and international students who, despite all odds, have excelled academically and professionally. Their stories and resilient spirit motivate me to do all I can to ensure our campus remains a welcoming and inclusive campus. As the chancellor and I have said, UCLA must continue to support everyone’s right to live, learn, work and pursue the American dream free from fear or discrimination.
The current administration has introduced numerous immigration policy changes that have triggered widespread anxiety and confusion for many members of the UCLA community. Without access to federal financial aid, undocumented and international Bruins struggle to pay for core educational needs like tuition, textbooks, transportation, and sometimes even basic human needs like food or shelter. Furthermore, students often face unexpected legal and attorney fees associated with their immigration status.
ACIP is composed of a wide array of faculty, administrators and student leaders. This council is committed to analyzing the impact of new and modified federal immigration policies at UCLA, recommending strategies for mitigating any negative consequences of these policies, and advising the Chancellor of the needs and concerns of the UCLA community.
