Adrian Bacong

Hello! My name is Adrian and I'm a 2nd year Community Health Sciences PhD student at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health (UCLA FSPH).  I'm very excited to run for Team FSPH in the LA BIG 5K this March in preparation for my own half-marathon in San Francisco at the end of July.

Inspired by my youngest brother, Austin, who ran his first half marathon in 2018, and my friends who are also distance runners, running has become a new and healthy hobby for me. It's been a great avenue  to take a break from the hustle and bustle of school and work towards daily self-improvement. Last year, I never thought I would able to run for distance, let alone sign up for a race. Today, I'm confident in my ability to keep a consistent schedule and also complete this 5K and my half-marathon this year. More importantly, being able to run with the UCLA FSPH community, a community that has become a second family to me, provides me with the inspiration and strength to persevere in this next challenge!

Being a student at UCLA has provided me with numerous opportunities to work both locally and globally. From working with advocates addressing homelessness here in Los Angeles to creating a public service announcement addressing measles vaccination uptake with university students in the Philippines, it has been a privilege to apply my studies to real issues.

I am running with Team FSPH to raise money for summer fellowships, so that students like me can have the opportunity to participate in meaningful summer fieldwork experiences. Your gift will enable students to apply their studies to solve real-world problems. They will be able to collaborate with institutions and organizations that can benefit from the work of UCLA FSPH students, but may not have the funds to provide compensation. Your help and support will allow students to make a real impact locally and globally.

If you have any questions or want to know more about where your gift will go, please feel free to reach out to me at adrianbacong@ucla.edu. Thank you for all of your support.
